PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Josh McGuire (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nathan Corbett (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Corbett has chosen Stronger as his entrance music. Josh McGuire looks tired to me. Hopefully he has got enough gas left in the tank to put in a good performance.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Josh McGuire!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Nathan Corbett!
The judges for this bout are Steve Erwin, John Mangel and Eliza Hachem.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Corbett looks to land a combination but McGuire avoids it well.

Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Corbett!
McGuire could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Corbett gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
McGuire won't allow Corbett to get back to his feet.

Corbett has hold of McGuire's hands but McGuire slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

McGuire wants to pass to mount but Corbett is defending the position.
McGuire is breathing heavily.

Corbett kicks McGuire off and gets back to his feet.
Corbett looks to throw the jab but McGuire is out of range.

McGuire darts in and clinches Corbett up against the cage.
Corbett wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Corbett wants to break the clinch but can't.

Corbett throws an elbow that misses.
Corbett swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Corbett looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.

McGuire has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Corbett regains guard immediately.

Corbett throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
McGuire stops Corbett from standing up.
McGuire postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
McGuire is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Corbett is looking to stand up but McGuire isn't so interested in that idea.

McGuire decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

McGuire fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Corbett sprawls well initially but McGuire persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

McGuire has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
McGuire can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Corbett is looking to escape.
McGuire throwing strikes here but Corbett is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.
Corbett is squirming around, avoiding McGuire's attempts to control the action.

McGuire with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.

McGuire trying to control but Corbett is having none of it.

McGuire moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Corbett has worked his arm free - good work by Corbett!
Corbett is looking for a sweep.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
McGuire is looking to take a break and control but Corbett is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

McGuire is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Corbett has escaped the position, nice work there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Josh McGuire dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Corbett.
A head kick misses from Corbett.
A punch combination from Corbett misses.
McGuire throws a lazy head kick
and Corbett counters with a series of strikes. McGuire will be more careful next time no doubt.

McGuire closes the distance and pushes Corbett back into the cage.
Corbett jumps guard but McGuire turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.
Corbett wants to break the clinch but can't.

McGuire breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
McGuire takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.
Corbett fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Josh McGuire has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Nathan Corbett.

McGuire forces Corbett back against the cage and clinches.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

McGuire escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Corbett pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces McGuire back to the cage. Corbett follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.

Corbett fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Corbett lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but McGuire circles away quickly and effectively.

McGuire feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
McGuire stays in close to Corbett's body and controls the position.

Corbett looking for subs off his back but McGuire has passed one foot through into half guard.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

McGuire is working for a submission of some sort.
McGuire landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.

McGuire is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
McGuire tries to pass the half guard into mount. Corbett knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Corbett is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of McGuire's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take McGuire's back!

McGuire is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.

Despite being in a bad position, McGuire is controlling the hands, preventing any submission attempts.
Corbett looking to soften up his opponent with punches.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

McGuire trying to control but he's just got himself in more trouble.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Josh McGuire will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


McGuire takes a head kick and shrugs it off.
Corbett tries to score a power double leg takedown but McGuire sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Corbett somewhat.

Corbett explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there!

McGuire pushes Corbett up against the cage in a clinch.

McGuire pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Corbett throws a combination. McGuire tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Corbett throws a shot to the body.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Corbett throws a nice looking combination but McGuire bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Corbett misses with the combination.
Corbett misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Corbett throws a right and a left that both miss.
Corbett looks for a takedown but McGuire sprawls well.
Corbett lands with a kick to the temple. McGuire shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"

McGuire changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Corbett looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

McGuire takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
McGuire won't let Corbett get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

McGuire is standing up, even though he is in mount.
McGuire throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.

Corbett throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Corbett gets caught flat footed, as McGuire shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
McGuire won't allow Corbett to sweep him here.

McGuire stands up from Corbett's guard - McGuire perhaps looking for a knockout.
Corbett throws a right hand that McGuire ducks under and follows up with a left that McGuire also avoids with ease.

McGuire closes the distance and clinches.

Corbett manages to pull guard.
Corbett thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

McGuire is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
McGuire prevents Corbett from getting back to his feet.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Josh McGuire.
Corbett shoots for a takedown but McGuire saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Nathan Corbett has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Josh McGuire is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Josh McGuire has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Nathan Corbett.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Corbett shoots in looking for a takedown. McGuire tries to sprawl out of it but Corbett keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. McGuire manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Josh McGuire.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for McGuire, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
