PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Lennard (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Evan Horizon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, John Lennard!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Evan Horizon!
The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Russell Pearce and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Horizon will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Horizon throws a big shot that misses.
Lennard ducks under a wild hook from Horizon.
Lennard shoots in looking for a takedown but Horizon manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Lennard's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Lennard is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Horizon's half guard.
Horizon manages to get to full guard.
Lennard stops Horizon from standing up.
Lennard wants to control from the top but Horizon keeps moving.

We're going to have a standup here because John Lennard wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.

Lennard wants to take the fight to the mat but Horizon manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.

Horizon throws a head punch that misses.

Lennard breaks from the clinch.
Horizon fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Lennard is out of range.

Lennard rushes Horizon and presses him up against the cage.
Horizon is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
Lennard is looking to break free of the clinch but Horizon has double underhooks.

Lennard ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Lennard no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Horizon tries to free his leg and advance position but Lennard is retaining full guard.

Lennard is trying to keep Horizon in close.
Horizon passes Lennard's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Lennard is breathing heavily.
Lennard is trying to get back to full guard.
Horizon trying to pass the guard but Lennard defending well.

Horizon is trying to control. Lennard wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Horizon tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Lennard paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Horizon is looking to clinch but Lennard is avoiding it.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Lennard fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Horizon to the ground. Lennard is now in Horizon's guard.
Horizon not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that John Lennard will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Horizon fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Lennard looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Horizon attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.
Evan Horizon seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Horizon is looking to clinch but Lennard is avoiding it.
Horizon misses with a low kick.
John Lennard is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Lennard.
Horizon is looking to chop away at Lennard's legs.
Horizon thows a body shot but no joy.
Lennard swings for the body but Horizon moves out of range.
Lennard fails with a takedown attempt.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Horizon enables Lennard to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Horizon manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Lennard has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Horizon manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Lennard manages to get himself to full guard.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Horizon passes Lennard's left leg - he's now in half guard.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Evan Horizon hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Horizon tries to close the distance and clinch but Lennard swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
A clash of legs there as Lennard blocks the low kick.
Lennard blocks a head kick by Horizon.

Lennard manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Horizon on his heels. He'll look to pass Horizon's guard now, I'm sure.
Horizon is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Evan Horizon showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Horizon.

Lennard misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Horizon.

Horizon tries to throw a body punch but Lennard avoids it by throwing Horizon back against the cage.

Horizon fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Lennard wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Horizon is trying to force a seperation but Lennard has the dominant position.

Horizon is pushing Lennard up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
Horizon lands a left hand that snaps the head of Lennard backwards.
Lennard is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Horizon pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Horizon tries to stall but Lennard uses the opportunity to gain a better position.

Some bone on bone action there as Lennard checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Lennard uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Horizon.

Lennard tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Horizon manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Horizon stuffs the takedown attempt from Lennard. Lennard gets slowly back to his feet.

Horizon throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Horizon lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.
Horizon tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Lennard manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Lennard drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Lennard is defended easily by Horizon.

Horizon wants to slow Lennard down by chopping away at his legs.

Horizon pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Horizon pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Lennard throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Horizon ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
Horizon tries to clinch there but Lennard circles away.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Horizon fakes a jab and throws a low kick but Lennard checks it well.
Lennard is hobbling a little on that front leg after taking quite a few leg kicks so far in this fight.
Horizon wants to clinch.
Horizon is looking to clinch.

Evan Horizon comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Horizon has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
