1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Vladimir Gernansky! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Vonshutenhout! The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Wesley Smith and Cecil Peabody.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gernansky looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Vonshutenhout with a poor takedown so Gernansky counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. Vonshutenhout lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Gernansky! The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Gernansky tries to get back to half guard but can't. Vonshutenhout lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Gernansky hang on? The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Vonshutenhout tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Gernansky working to try and regain half guard.
Vonshutenhout wants to control but Gernansky has made it back to half guard. Nice work. Vonshutenhout is trying to control the action in half guard but Gernansky is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gernansky regains full guard. Nicely done. Gernansky wants to sweep here but Vonshutenhout controlling him for the moment. Vonshutenhout stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gernansky swivels though and keeps the full guard. Vonshutenhout looks gassed! Gernansky is trying to keep Vonshutenhout in close.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Gernansky is on top in guard.
Vonshutenhout seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now. Gernansky missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Gernansky wants to pass the guard but Vonshutenhout is keeping the position. Gernansky postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. Vonshutenhout is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Vonshutenhout kicks Gernansky off and gets to his feet. Vonshutenhout misses with a double jab
and Gernansky counters with a nice double leg into side control. Vonshutenhout won't be happy with that. Gernansky tries to advance position but instead Vonshutenhout slips a leg back in to half guard. Gernansky uses his free foot to push down on Vonshutenhout's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Vonshutenhout.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gernansky raining down shots from the mount! Vonshutenhout tries to lock up and control but Gernansky gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Gernansky scoring with strikes but Vonshutenhout is staying in there. Gernansky goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Vonshutenhout is on top in guard.
Gernansky bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Vonshutenhout's guard. Gernansky with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Vonshutenhout is trying to control the position but Gernansky postures up. Gernansky is looking to stand up but Vonshutenhout won't let him.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Gernansky thows a big elbow that misses. Gernansky wants to control from the top but Vonshutenhout keeps moving. Gernansky content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots. Vonshutenhout keeping full guard, as Gernansky tries to pass. Vonshutenhout lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Gernansky! Gernansky is trying to stand but he's not in a good position to be doing that! Vonshutenhout has taken his back! The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Gernansky tries to roll but Vonshutenhout sticks to his back.

Gernansky really is a fat lump. Vonshutenhout wants to control the position but Gernansky frees himself and scrambles - Vonshutenhout manages to regain control in side control.

Vonshutenhout shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Gernansky counters by clinching up. Gernansky breaks the clinch.
Vonshutenhout has his takedown stuffed and Gernansky counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Vonshutenhout's guard now. Gernansky preventing the sweep. Gernansky trying to stand up but can't free himself from Vonshutenhout's guard. Vonshutenhout keeping moving, preventing Gernansky from controlling successfully. Gernansky postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Vonshutenhout is breathing heavily. Gernansky trying to control but Vonshutenhout is working from the bottom. Gernansky wants to get up but he can't break Vonshutenhout's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Gernansky tries to pass the half guard into mount. Vonshutenhout knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Gernansky drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Vonshutenhout is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Gernansky off and has taken his back! Gernansky controlling the position well but he knows he's in a bad position. Gernansky is defending well here and trying to improve his position.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Gernansky landing rabbit punches to the side of Vonshutenhout's head. Not doing much damage but still scoring a few points. Vonshutenhout is tying to control. Gernansky wants to improve his position but can't escape this time. Gernansky gets full guard. Gernansky is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Vonshutenhout gets to his feet - Gernansky follows without any prompting. Vonshutenhout doesn't succeed with the takedown and Gernansky counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Gernansky. Vladimir Gernansky has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of John Vonshutenhout. Gernansky wants the takedown. Vonshutenhout is fighting it off but Gernansky persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Vonshutenhout's guard against the cage. Gernansky slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Gernansky connects with a nice short shot to Vonshutenhout's temple. Vladimir Gernansky overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Gernansky stands up and beckons Vonshutenhout to join him on the feet. Gernansky feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Gernansky shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Vonshutenhout's guard. Gernansky postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Vonshutenhout is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Gernansky, into his guard. Vonshutenhout wants to control from the top but Gernansky keeps moving. Gernansky throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Vonshutenhout escapes and throws Gernansky's legs to the side, diving into side control! Vonshutenhout happy to just control the position for now. Vonshutenhout is absolutely dripping with sweat - he looks exhausted. Gernansky is looking for a sweep.

He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Gernansky tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Vonshutenhout!
