The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Cantwell misses with an uppercut. Whales lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected. Cantwell misses with a takedown attempt and Whales counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. Cantwell takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Nice defenses there by Cantwell. Whales connects with a looping right hand.
Cantwell misses with a takedown attempt - Whales sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Cantwell gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there. Cantwell gets tackled into the cage by Whales. Whales maintains the clinch. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Whales pushes Cantwell back against the cage and unloads with a body punch. Whales lands a body shot in the clinch.
Cantwell tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Whales digs a right hand underneath Cantwell's ribcage. Cantwell let out a lung full of air as it connected.
That's one minute gone in the round. Whales softening up his opponent with strikes, against the cage. Whales stays in close to his opponent and throws a right hand to the body. Whales is leaning against Cantwell and scores with a nice uppercut to the body. Whales works for underhooks and lands a body shot in the process.
Cantwell tries to pull guard but Whales holds him up against the cage and eventually Cantwell drops back down to his feet.

Cantwell tries to circle away but Whales has him pinned against the cage. Whales lands a nice looking hook to the body, against the cage. Whales prevents Cantwell from breaking the clinch. A nice left hand lands by Whales.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Whales displaying some good clinch control by pressing Cantwell up against the cage. Whales throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Cantwell jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Whales walks away with a smile on his face. Cantwell gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head. No luck for Cantwell with that takedown attempt. Whales moves into the clinch successfully.

The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch. Whales throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges. Whales throws a blind hook that connects with the side of Cantwells head. A shot in the inside from Whales.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Whales lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Cantwell backwards. Whales is working Cantwell over against the cage. Whales lands an uppercut. Cantwell tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Whales smiles and moves away.
Whales connects with a right hand. Cantwell shakes it off. Cantwell has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Cantwell there as he acknowledges the shot. Whales lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Whales throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Cantwell on the side of the head. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Cantwell takes a shot to the body in his stride.
A lazy left from Whales finds it's target.
Cantwell is rocked! Nice cross by Whales. Oh Cantwell is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!! Cantwell walks right into a perfectly timed right hook and goes down hard! He's out cold! The ref cradles Cantwell limp body while Whales jumps on to the cage and waves to the roaring crowd. Wow that was just a brutal knockout!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:55 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Patrick Whales! Patrick Whales is the new middleweight champion!
