PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Triton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cain Velasqs (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cain Velasqs will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 6 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Triton!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Cain Velasqs!
The judges for this bout are Stewart Dunkirk, Frank Dennis and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Triton tries to clinch but Velasqs is having none of it.
Velasqs fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Triton doesn't manage to clinch there - Velasqs circles away.
A punch combination from Velasqs misses.
Velasqs scores with a nice body kick.
Velasqs throws a head kick that misses.
Velasqs throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Velasqs is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Velasqs tries to sprawl but Triton drives through with a takedown into half guard.

Velasqs is defending against the submission attempts here by Triton.
Velasqs has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Triton is working away from the top position though.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Velasqs wants to get back to full guard.
Velasqs is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Velasqs is defending against the submission attempts here by Triton.

Triton is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Velasqs defends it well.

Triton trying to control from Velasqs's half guard. Velasqs has other ideas though and has regained full guard.

Velasqs escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Triton gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Triton tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Velasqs manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Velasqs keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Velasqs moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Velasqs getting the better of the striking in that exchange.
Velasqs connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son.
Velasqs scoring well with a low kick there.
Velasqs takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Velasqs throws a head kick that half lands.
Velasqs buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Triton feints and as Velasqs raises his hands in defense, Triton changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that John Triton will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Triton swings widly with a right hand
and Velasqs counters with a big head kick but Triton shrugs it off.
Velasqs walks into a stiff left hand from Triton.
John Triton seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Triton thows a body shot but no joy.
Velasqs has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Triton finds it's way round the side to connect with Velasqs's head.
Triton throws an overhand right that lands on Velasqs's shoulder, as Velasqs tries to avoid the shot.
An inside leg kick lands from Velasqs.
Velasqs avoids the body shot from Triton.
Velasqs lands with a right hand.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Velasqs lands a glancing blow to the side of Triton's head.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Velasqs connects with a high kick.
Triton tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Velasqs paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Triton is trying hard to land a takedown here. Velasqs sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Velasqs with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.

Triton gets the takedown into side control.
Velasqs is letting Triton control him for a moment.
Velasqs tries to bench press Triton off him but Triton keeps the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Velasqs regains half guard there - taking advantage of Triton's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.
Triton controlling the pace.
Velasqs works his way to full guard. Good work.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Triton stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Velasqs swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Triton wants to pass the guard but Velasqs is keeping the position.
Triton is working hard here to advance position.
Velasqs looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Triton trying to control but Velasqs is working from the bottom.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Velasqs throws a head kick but Triton moves out of range.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Velasqs keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Velasqs pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Triton throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Velasqs was covering up waiting for the punch and Triton finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Triton stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Velasqs swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Triton dominated that second round.
That's time! Triton's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


A looping hook to the body misses from Triton. Velasqs does a little dance to reset his feet.
Triton takes a kick to the side of the head.
Velasqs scores with a jab to the jaw.
Velasqs throws a head kick but Triton moves out of range.
Velasqs scores with a head kick.
Velasqs catches Triton with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
Velasqs keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Triton.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Triton changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Velasqs tries to avoid it but Triton manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Velasqs to the ground. Velasqs escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Velasqs scores with a head kick.

Triton fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Velasqs to the ground. Triton is now in Velasqs's guard.

Triton drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Velasqs dives on top into guard.
Velasqs trying to control but Triton is working from the bottom.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Triton working for a triangle but Velasqs defends it easily.
Velasqs controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Triton looking for a guillotine here but Velasqs defends easily.

Velasqs postures up.
Velasqs controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Triton looking to control but Velasqs passes into half guard.
Velasqs throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Triton trying to hold on to Velasqs's head to control him but Velasqs postures up.
Triton is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Velasqs is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Triton tries to get to full guard but Velasqs has control of the leg.
Velasqs wants to lay and pray for a moment but Triton keeps working.
Triton keeping control of the position.

John Triton has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Velasqs misses with a head kick.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Cain Velasqs.
I think Triton has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
