PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Andy Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Frank Zappa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Andy Jones has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Andy Jones seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Andy Jones!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Frank Zappa!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Arvi Lind and Johanna Lukiainen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Zappa takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
Zappa closes the distance and clinches up with Jones, looking for a takedown. Zappa pushes Jones against the cage but Jones circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Jones fails in his attempt to clinch.
Jones tries a head kick but it misses.
Zappa shoots for a double leg takedown but Jones sprawls well. He's pushed Zappa's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Zappa looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Jones is fending him off so far but Zappa persists. Nope, Jones circles away and we're back to standing.
Andy Jones has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Frank Zappa.
Jones throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Jones does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Zappa looks for a takedown but Jones sprawls well.
Jones tries to land a front kick but Zappa steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Jones rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Zappa moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Jones tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Zappa will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Zappa slips a jab and a cross from Jones.
Andy Jones is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Jones misses with a wild combination.
Zappa throws a shot from downtown. Jones moves away and avoids it.
Zappa closes the distance and clinches up with Jones, looking for a takedown. Zappa pushes Jones against the cage but Jones circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Jones throws out a leg kick but Zappa moves out of range and Jones only half commits.
A slapping leg kick lands for Jones.
Zappa shoots in for a takedown but Jones shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Zappa!

Zappa dodges the punch combination from Jones.
Zappa tries for a takedown but Jones sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Zappa takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Jones looking to land some kicks to the body here.
Nice sprawl there from Jones as Zappa shoots in.
Zappa shoots in looking for a takedown. Jones tries to sprawl out of it but Zappa keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Jones manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Jones misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
A punch combination from Jones misses.

Jones is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Jones tries to bum rush Zappa with a series of wild strikes but Zappa uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Jones fails to land with a series of punches.
That kick from Jones tenderised Zappa's leg. Zappa is trying to keep his angry face on.
Jones throws a body kick that misses.
Jones throws a low kick but it's checked well by Zappa.
Jones throws a sloppy head kick and Zappa moves out of range easily.
Jones connects with an inside leg kick.
Jones tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Zappa thows a left - swing and a miss!

Zappa is looking to score with low kicks.

Zappa scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

Zappa is trying to get an arm triangle but Jones is defending well.

Zappa is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Jones is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Zappa is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Jones knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Andy Jones will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



Zappa shoots in and bounces Jones off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Zappa stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Jones swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Zappa trying to control the position from guard on top but Jones is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Zappa is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

That's one minute gone in the round.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Frank Zappa wasn't active enough on the ground.
Jones slips under a jab.
Horrible takedown by Zappa or perhaps it was just good defense by Jones which made him look bad.
A combination from Zappa does no damage.

Jones misses with a body kick.
Jones throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
Zappa shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Zappa shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Jones's guard.
Zappa stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Jones swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Jones trying to keep a closed guard but Zappa is proving a slippery customer.

Zappa drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Jones dives on top into guard.
Zappa is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Andy Jones just wasn't active enough.
Jones thuds his right hand into Zappa's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters.
Zappa looks for a takedown but Jones sprawls well.
Andy Jones has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Frank Zappa.
Zappa keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.
Jones buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.

Zappa pivots, looking for a leg kick but Jones is out of range and Zappa settles back down.
Jones lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.
Jones misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Andy Jones is winning the standup battle so far.
Sloppy strikes from Jones. Those never looked like landing.
Zappa showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Jones.
Zappa throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Jones's waist but Jones gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Zappa off to one side.
Zappa avoids a punch combination nicely.

Jones takes a shot right to the bread basket.
Jones stuffs the takedown.
Andy Jones is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Jones enables Zappa to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Jones manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Zappa drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Jones manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Zappa has Jones in his guard.

Zappa kicks Jones off and gets to his feet.

A combination from Zappa does no damage.
Jones throws a series of punches but Zappa avoids them all with ease.
Zappa throws a right and a left that Jones avoids nicely.
Jones plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!
Jones throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Zappa throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Jones misses with a wild combination.
Zappa tries to work over Jones's front leg with a kick but Jones checks it.

Jones lands a leg kick that knocks Zappa off balance momentarily.
Jones swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Jones throws a leg kick but Zappa sees it coming and checks it nicely.
Zappa has a takedown stuffed.
Andy Jones has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Frank Zappa.
Zappa avoids a kick to the body.

Jones gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Zappa to score an easy takedown into full guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Zappa is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Jones avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Frank Zappa.
Zappa closes the distance and clinches up with Jones, looking for a takedown. Zappa pushes Jones against the cage but Jones circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Jones pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Jones stuffs the takedown attempt from Zappa. Zappa gets slowly back to his feet.
Zappa blocks a leg kick.
Zappa shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Zappa ducks under a wild hook from Jones.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Jones leaves Zappa with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Jones tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Zappa is able to avoid easily.

And that's the end of the fight!
Frank Zappa comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Zappa has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
