PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Maxwell Hickman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kyle Pearce (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pearce has a niggling injury. He would have liked to come in 100% fit but that's not always possible. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Maxwell Hickman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Kyle Pearce!
The judges for this bout are Ren Mimura, Hirohito Nitta and Yasuomi Hirokawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Hickman scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Hickman wants to free his trapped foot but Pearce is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Hickman is looking to take a break and control but Pearce is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Hickman throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Hickman seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Maxwell Hickman has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Hickman tries to clinch but Pearce is having none of it.

Hickman feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Pearce looks gassed!
Hickman is pushing down on Pearce's leg trying to pass to half guard. Pearce is fighting to maintain full guard but Hickman has managed to sneak the leg through.

Hickman passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Pearce!

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Pearce can do anything to dispel that myth.
Pearce really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Hickman. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Hickman is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Pearce has managed to escape the submission attempt.

Hickman can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Pearce is looking to escape.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Hickman thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!
Hickman postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Pearce looks a forlorn figure.
Hickman pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Hickman is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Maxwell Hickman dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Hickman throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Hickman is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Pearce's half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hickman has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Hickman controlling his opponent.
Pearce is breathing heavily.
Hickman seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Pearce for as long as he can get away with.

Pearce tries to improve his position but instead Hickman has taken his back!

Hickman working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Hickman is looking to control Pearce but Pearce is wriggling around and keeping busy.

Hickman throwing strikes from the back - he gets a warning from the referee for striking the back of the head but all these shots are hurting Pearce!
Pearce is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.

Hickman is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Pearce defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Hickman trying to secure his dominant position for a moment - making sure Pearce doesn't escape.
Hickman wants to control but Pearce manages to buck him off and is now in Hickman's guard! Nice work there by Pearce!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Maxwell Hickman dominated that second round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Hickman misses the shot to the body.
Hickman shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Pearce as he jumps to the side.
Hickman is looking to clinch.
Hickman throws a hook but Pearce avoids it easily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Pearce doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Hickman decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Pearce's guard.
Hickman is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Pearce takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Hickman wants to control from the top but Pearce keeps moving.

Hickman drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Hickman jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Still in half guard, Hickman seems content to control.
Hickman has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Hickman's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Maxwell Hickman just wasn't active enough.
Hickman tries for a takedown but Pearce sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

and Hickman counters with a single leg into guard. Pearce didn't expect that.
Hickman controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Kyle Pearce has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Hickman is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Hickman here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Maxwell Hickman wasn't doing enough on the ground.

Hickman shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.

And that's the end of the fight!

Well Hickman has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
