1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, RJ Howard! The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, and Don Winkell.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Howard feints and as Viet raises his hands in defense, Howard changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Viet is looking for a triangle but Howard pushes his legs off easily.

Howard loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Viet is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Viet looking for a guillotine here but Howard defends easily.
Viet has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Howard can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Viet looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Viet has momentary wrist control but Howard slips an elbow through the middle. Howard sitting in guard, not really doing much. Viet looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Howard has picked Viet up and slammed him! Viet can't keep hold of the triangle and Howard manages to pass to side control! Howard is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Howard tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Howard decides to stand back up. Howard scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. Viet is trying to stand back up but Howard is controlling him
That's two minutes gone in the round. Viet works his way to full guard. Good work. Howard really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Viet. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Viet has his foot on Howard's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Howard works his way back into a safe position though. Viet had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Howard defends it easily. Howard got a little sloppy there for a moment and Viet has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Howard has managed to get both his arms back between Viet's legs - danger averted. Viet keeping moving, preventing Howard from controlling successfully. Viet has his feet on Howard's thighs here. He's pushed Howard off and worked for a very quick armbar from the bottom! He's flipped onto his stomach and he's cranking hard on the arm! Howard screams in pain and taps out! This one is all over!
