Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Daniel Oliveira! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Diogo Pontes! The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Luis Engracia and Paulo Santos.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Pontes stuffs the takedown attempt from Oliveira. Oliveira gets slowly back to his feet. Oliveira tries to close the distance and clinch but Pontes swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Pontes is trying hard to land a takedown here. Oliveira sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. A nice combination there by Oliveira.
Pontes shoots in looking for a takedown. Oliveira tries to sprawl out of it but Pontes keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Oliveira manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Oliveira closes the distance looking to clinch and Pontes counters into the clinch. Nicely done. Pontes tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Oliveira avoids it. Oliveira is trying to drag Pontes to the mat but Pontes just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there. Oliveira changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Pontes fights it off and pushes away nicely.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Daniel Oliveira. That's going to take a lot out of him. Pontes gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Oliveira to score an easy takedown into full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet. Pontes controls Oliveira momentarily but Oliveira frees himself. Pontes wants to stand but Oliveira is controlling the position. Pontes keeping full guard, as Oliveira tries to pass. Oliveira wanted to stand there but Pontes had control of the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Pontes keeping moving, preventing Oliveira from controlling successfully. Oliveira showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
The ref stands the fighters back up because Daniel Oliveira just wasn't active enough. Pontes throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Pontes looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Oliveira is fending him off so far but Pontes persists. Nope, Oliveira circles away and we're back to standing. Oliveira's jab looks to have found its range, popping Pontes under the eye. Oliveira shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Pontes as he jumps to the side. Pontes fails to land the takedown.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Pontes misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Oliveira bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Pontes looks gassed! Oliveira has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand. Pontes fails to land the takedown. Oliveira throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Pontes's waist but Pontes gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Oliveira off to one side. Pontes fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Oliveira is looking to clinch. Oliveira has closed the distance and engaged Pontes in a clinch.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Oliveira gets control of Pontes's arms and successfully pulls guard. Oliveira will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back. Oliveira is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Pontes has his hands clasped together but Oliveira extends an breaks Pontes's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Oliveira.
