PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Punk Cara (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Aksashy Saja (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Saja has chosen scary monsters and nice sprites as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Punk Cara!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Aksashy Saja!
The judges for this bout are Shirou Masuda, Shigeki Fujiwara and Kenichi Hosakawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cara tries to clinch but Saja is having none of it.
Saja lands with a hook. Cara tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
Some wild striking there from Saja.
Cara dives in and grabs Saja's left leg, looking for a takedown. Saja pushes down on Cara's head and hops out.
Cara fails with an attempt to clinch.
Cara shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Saja as he avoids it easily.
Saja swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Cara tries for a takedown but Saja circles away easily
and Saja counters with a leg kick.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Punk Cara. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Cara shoots in but Saja avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Saja defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Cara.
Cara fails with a takedown attempt.
Punk Cara seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Cara is breathing heavily.

Cara shoots and misses

and Saja counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

Saja is trying to work for a kimura but Cara is defending well.
Saja trying to control the pace.
Saja's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Saja postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Cara to stand up.
Saja throws a sloppy head kick and Cara moves out of range easily.

Saja rushes Cara and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Cara looking to stall.

Saja pulls guard effortlessly.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Cara trying to control but Saja is working from the bottom.
Saja is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Still in half guard, Saja seems content to control.

Cara looking for submissions off his back.
Saja blocks the strikes from Cara.

Well, if Saja is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Saja seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Cara does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Cara is trying to maintain the position but Saja is very close to passing his half guard.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Saja gets a double leg takedown into Cara's guard.

Cara is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Saja defends well.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Saja drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Saja wants to stand but Cara has his arm trapped.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Saja controlling from side mount.
I wouldn't like to be where Cara is right now.
Cara can't do much from the bottom here.
Cara is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control.
Saja wants to control for a moment but Cara uses the opportunity to move back to half guard.

Saja wants to free his trapped foot but Cara is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Saja is looking to stall here but Cara recovers full guard.
Cara is trying to keep Saja in close.
Saja stays in close to Cara's body and controls the position.

and Saja counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Cara!
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Saja tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Cara is desperately trying to improve his position but Saja has a good base and remains in mount.

Saja prevents Cara from getting the reversal.
Saja connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Cara tries to hold on but Saja postures up.
Cara tries to reverse the position but Saja maintains control.
Saja looking to control and managing it successfully.
Saja trying to control but he's not successful this time.

Cara wants to control but Saja is having none of it.
Saja takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Cara is trying desperately to improve position.
Saja really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Cara. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Saja is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Cara can't stay in a position like this for much longer.
Cara is bucking up trying to escape but Saja cracks him with another couple of good strikes.

Saja looking to control but Cara is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Cara regains half guard.
Saja prevents Cara from improving his position.
Saja seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Cara doesn't manage to clinch there - Saja circles away.
Cara shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Saja defends it nicely.
Cara is trying hard to land a takedown here. Saja sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Cara shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Saja as he jumps to the side.
Saja throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Saja closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Cara to the mat! Cara manages to get full guard.
Saja must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Saja is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Saja tries to free his leg and advance position but Cara is retaining full guard.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Aksashy Saja hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Saja looks to land a combination but Cara avoids it well.

Cara tries to close the distance and clinch up but Saja swats him away and circles back towards the center.
No joy there for Saja, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Cara tries to score a power double leg takedown but Saja sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Cara somewhat.
Saja pulls out of a head kick attempt.
