PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Matt Hodson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jamie McKenna (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hodson comes to the cage accompanied by Break Some Off by KoRn. McKenna has chosen Jiu Jitsu as his entrance music. Jamie McKenna is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Matt Hodson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jamie McKenna!
The judges for this bout are Donatello Bradman, John Mangel and Damien Edna.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McKenna shoots for a takedown but Hodson saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
McKenna shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Hodson as he jumps to the side.

McKenna closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Hodson to the mat! Hodson manages to get full guard.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
McKenna postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

McKenna drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Hodson manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now McKenna has Hodson in his guard.
McKenna trying to keep a closed guard but Hodson is proving a slippery customer.
Hodson stops McKenna from standing up.

McKenna looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
McKenna bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Hodson's guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
McKenna is looking to work some ground and pound but Hodson has wrist control.

McKenna thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Hodson keeping moving, preventing McKenna from controlling successfully.
Hodson manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. McKenna manages to get himself to full guard.

McKenna working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Hodson doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Hodson manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
McKenna looking to control.

Hodson stands and steps away. McKenna gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
McKenna shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Hodson but Hodson pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Matt Hodson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jamie McKenna.
McKenna shoots for a double leg takedown but Hodson sprawls well. He's pushed McKenna's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Hodson lands a jab to the nose.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Hodson throws a combination but it was largely blocked by McKenna.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hodson connects with a good right hand that stumbles McKenna. McKenna circles away out of range and recomposes himself.


It looks like Jamie McKenna has been cut.
McKenna closes the distance and clinches up with Hodson, looking for a takedown. McKenna pushes Hodson against the cage but Hodson circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Hodson lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
McKenna has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Hodson finds it's way round the side to connect with McKenna's head.
McKenna shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Hodson defends it nicely.
Hodson misses with a series of wild punches.
Jamie McKenna seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
No luck for McKenna with that takedown attempt.
McKenna fails with a takedown attempt.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from McKenna.
McKenna looks gassed!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
McKenna shoots in but Hodson avoids the takedown attempt easily.
A jab from Hodson does it's job there.
Hodson lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
McKenna takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
McKenna shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.


That has opened up Jamie McKenna's cut even more.
Matt Hodson is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
McKenna fails with a takedown attempt.
Hodson scores with a jab.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Hodson stuffs the takedown.
Hodson defends well against a solid takedown attempt from McKenna.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The cut man is working on Jamie McKenna's cut.
That's time! Hodson's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

McKenna takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
Matt Hodson is winning the standup battle so far.
A punch lands to the side of McKenna 's head but he takes it in his stride.
McKenna shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Hodson as he avoids it easily.
Matt Hodson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jamie McKenna.
McKenna takes one on the chin but keeps coming.

The cut above Jamie McKenna's eye is starting to cause him problems now.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
McKenna throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Hodson keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Hodson throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Matt Hodson is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Hodson lands a jab to McKenna's midsection.
Hodson lands a nice hook to McKenna's body. McKenna takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Hodson is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all.
McKenna is breathing heavily.
Hodson connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed McKenna momentarily.

McKenna shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
McKenna is still on wobbly legs! Can Hodson finish him?
McKenna ducks into an uppercut from Hodson and that's knocked him out cold! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:12 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Matt Hodson!
During a confident post fight interview, Matt Hodson thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
