Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Ed Reed (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Sam Benton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Benton has chosen Kung Fu Fighting as his entrance music. The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Reed throws a series of punches but Benton moves out of range. Benton shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Reed as he avoids it easily. Benton shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Reed's guard. Reed is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Benton trying to control but Reed is working from the bottom. Benton pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Reed is keeping the position for now. Reed keeping moving, preventing Benton from controlling successfully. Reed wriggles free and stands up. Reed lands a slapping body shot.
Reed gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. Reed pushes Benton off and scrambles back to his feet.
Benton looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Reed is fending him off so far but Benton persists. Nope, Reed circles away and we're back to standing. Benton shoots in but no luck this time. Ed Reed has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Sam Benton. Benton fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Reed throws a right and a left that Benton avoids nicely. Reed connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe. Nice takedown defense from Reed. No joy for Benton on that attempt.
That's one minute gone in the round. Reed scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction. Benton looks gassed! A combination from Reed does no damage. Reed misses with a straight left. Ed Reed is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Benton uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Reed. A combination from Reed does no damage. Sam Benton seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Benton missing with a left hand there. Reed was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one. Reed throws out a loose jab but Benton uses good head movement to avoid it. Benton shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Reed pinned against the cage. Reed gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Benton drives through with a takedown into guard. Reed is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Benton is controlling him. Benton wants to pass the guard but Reed is keeping the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Benton passes easily into side control. Nice work. Benton wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Reed, who protects the arm well. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Reed is trying to escape and get back to his feet. Benton wants to control but Reed is keeping him busy. Reed wants to get back to his feet but Benton drags him back down.
That's three minutes gone in the round.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. The fighters circle momentarily. Reed darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch. Reed looks to score with a combo but nothing lands. Reed throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Benton. Benton showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Reed.
Horrible takedown by Benton or perhaps it was just good defense by Reed which made him look bad. Reed throws the left hand but Benton avoids the punch easily. Reed misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Benton uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Reed.
Reed swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Reed looks to land a right hand but Benton moved out of range. Reed takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away. Reed thows a left - swing and a miss! Benton fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Reed throws a leg kick but Benton checks it. Reed lands with a nice combination. Benton backs away looking to recover. Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Reed, as that shot connected.
Left hook, right uppercut from Reed.
Benton is rocked! Benton throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Reed's waist but Reed gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Benton off to one side. Benton is still on wobbly legs! Can Reed finish him? Benton ducks under a wild hook from Reed. Reed misses with a two punch combination.
Benton seems to have recovered his senses.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Benton shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Reed tries to kick Benton off but Benton keeps his base steady and stays in half guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Benton in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Reed tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Benton!
