1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Mark Hughes! The judges for this bout are Ren Mimura, Hirohito Nitta and Shirou Masuda.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Hessburg throws a left and a right that both miss
and Hughes counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground. Hughes drops back, looking for a kneebar! Hessburg looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Hessburg looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Hessburg! Hughes tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck. Hessburg thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Hessburg landing punches. Hughes's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Hessburg misses with a head shot. Hessburg wants to control the pace but Hughes is squirming around nicely. Hessburg has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Hughes defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Hessburg. Hessburg with good strikes from the mount here!

Hessburg is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Hughes to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Hughes shrugs it off. Hessburg unloads with some shots from mount but Hughes bucks and avoids them well.
Hessburg postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Hughes looks a forlorn figure.

BOOM! Hessburg connects with a massive shot to the dome!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Hessburg takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Hessburg raining down hammerfists from mount. Hessburg scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Hughes?

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Hessburg cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
