PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jumbo Joe (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dele Obasi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jumbo Joe!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Dele Obasi!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Eliza Hachem and Skip Squint.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Joe misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

Obasi shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Joe holds on and takes a little breather.

Joe looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Obasi passes into half guard.
Joe wants to get back to his feet.
Joe blocking the ground and pound attempt from Obasi.

Joe tries to roll over but Obasi keeps him under control.
Joe makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Joe.

Joe is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Obasi defends well.

Obasi drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Obasi jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Obasi won't allow Joe to get back to his feet.

Joe keeping moving, preventing Obasi from controlling successfully.
Obasi throws a big elbow that misses.
Joe looking for a sweep. Not yet Joe, not yet.
Joe is breathing heavily.
Obasi trying to control but Joe is working from the bottom.

Dele Obasi has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Obasi shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Joe's guard.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Obasi is fighting to break Joe's control of his arms but Joe is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Obasi stays in close to Joe's body and controls the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Dele Obasi.
The fighters circling - Joe throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Joe shoots in but no luck this time.

Obasi has closed the distance and engaged Joe in a clinch.

Obasi has clasped his hands together around Joe's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Joe is trying to get back to full guard.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Obasi fails to land with a series of punches.
Joe closes the distance and lands a one-two.


It looks like Dele Obasi has been cut.
Joe fails with a takedown attempt.
Joe fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Obasi avoids it really well and circles away.

Obasi shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Joe is trying to defend but Obasi finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Joe has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Obasi is working away from the top position though.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Obasi has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Joe tries to hold on but Obasi postures up.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Obasi moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Joe has worked his arm free - good work by Joe!
Joe is not content to let Obasi control the position.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Dele Obasi showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!



Obasi throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Joe tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Obasi is in Joe's guard.
Obasi wants to control from the top but Joe keeps moving.
Obasi won't allow Joe to sweep him here.
Obasi controls from within his opponent's guard.
Obasi postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Dele Obasi has got the better of the ground game so far.

Obasi has gone for a leg lock! Joe slips out almost immediately though and dives into Obasi's guard.
Joe wants to stand and escape but instead Obasi has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Joe lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Obasi!
Obasi sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Joe seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Obasi does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Obasi gets back to full guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Obasi utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Joe trying to control the position from guard on top but Obasi is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Obasi is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Joe wants to stand but Obasi is controlling his posture from full guard.

Joe drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Obasi manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Joe has Obasi in his guard.
Obasi stands and throws Joe's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Obasi remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Obasi has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Obasi drives through with a takedown into Joe's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

Obasi decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Obasi shoots in and bounces Joe off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Obasi drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Joe dives on top into guard.

Jumbo Joe has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Joe is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Joe is looking to stand up but Obasi won't let him.

And that's the end of the fight!
Dele Obasi comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Obasi winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
