Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
13 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Luke Upton! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
14 - 11 - 0, fighting out of New York, Rory Markman! The judges for this bout are Reed Andrews, Eddie Farnsworth and David Schapiro.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Upton shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Markman eats them both and turns towards Upton to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo. Markman uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Upton. Markman fails with the takedown and Upton counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. Markman is trying hard to land a takedown here. Upton sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Markman bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. Markman tries for a takedown but Upton sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Luke Upton has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rory Markman. Markman gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Upton counters with a single leg into guard. Markman didn't expect that. We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Upton accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Markman tries to land a sweep but no joy. Markman avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Markman trying to control the position.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Upton passes easily into side control. Nice work. Upton sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Markman is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Upton throws an elbow but Markman slips to the side and avoids it well. Upton landing with strikes to the head and body from side control. Upton working the ground and pound but Markman is defending the strikes. Markman parries the strikes from Upton easily there. Upton is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Markman to escape.
Markman gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard. Upton is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Upton throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Upton throwing shots but Markman is blocking nicely. Markman works his way to full guard. Good work. Markman looking for a sweep. Not yet Markman, not yet. Markman managing to control the position. Upton missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Upton throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Markman works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Upton postures up.
Upton stopping the sweep attempt from Markman. Upton throwing strikes but missing. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Markman is on top in guard.
Markman wants to control from the top but Upton keeps moving. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Upton looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Upton had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Markman defends it easily. Markman trying to control but Upton is working from the bottom. Upton working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Markman doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Upton is tightening it up a little... Markman has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Markman reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Markman taps out! Nice BJJ there by Upton!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:46 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Choke). Luke Upton! A very excited looking Luke Upton rambled incoherently for about 5 minutes post fight about how awesome he is. It was kinda funny for a while but then everyone got annoyed.
