Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Devon James (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mike Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mike Smith told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

12 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Mike Smith!
The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Eliza Hachem and Donatello Bradman.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Smith chips away with some ground and pound.

James has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

James is trying to stand back up but Smith is controlling him

James pulls Smith in to control the position.
Smith is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
James escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Smith gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Smith must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

James will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

James working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Smith doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Smith manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Smith accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Smith misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Smith fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
James uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Smith.

Smith shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches James napping and manages to drive through into side control!

James is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Smith's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.

James is trying to control the position but Smith postures up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

James is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Smith defends well.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Smith slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

Smith looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks James with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

James is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Smith scores with a couple of nice shots.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

James is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Smith's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Smith's back!

James is cranking Smith's head sideways - that looks painful. He's managed to get his other arm under the chin and this looks bad for Smith! He's tightened the choke and Smith is tapping out!
