PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between James Jolley (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Manlio Marconi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Marconi has chosen Hail Holy Queen as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Manlio Marconi!
The judges for this bout are Gregory Folan, Dillan Fox and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Marconi misses with a right hand
and Jolley cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Marconi moves into the clinch.
Marconi misses with a punch to the body.
Marconi lands a shoulder strike.
Marconi tries a body shot but Jolley blocks it.
Marconi goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Jolley tries for a takedown. No joy.
Marconi goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Marconi lands a hook to the side of the head.
Marconi throws a blind hook that connects with the side of Jolleys head.
Marconi lands an uppercut.
Jolley is trying to pull guard but Marconi has him pressed against the cage.
Marconi lands on the inside with an uppercut.

Jolley has Marconi pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Marconi manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Jolley is looking to break free of the clinch but Marconi has double underhooks.

Marconi's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Marconi bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Jolley's head backwards.
Jolley shoots in for a takedown but Marconi shows good takedown defense.

Marconi tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Jolley was well out of range. Poor timing from Marconi.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Marconi fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Jolley manages to avoid it.

Jolley shoots in for a takedown but Marconi shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Jolley drops his hands momentarily and Marconi takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.


It looks like James Jolley has been cut.

Marconi jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Marconi misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Jolley.

Jolley moves out of range of the strikes.
Jolley fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
The crowd cheers as Marconi lands an impressive looking overhand right. Jolley doesn't seem phased though.

Marconi displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Jolley.

Jolley closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Marconi did well to prevent Jolley getting side control.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Jolley is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Marconi has managed to free his arm - good work.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Jolley tries to pass the half guard into mount. Marconi knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Marconi is trying to maintain the position but Jolley is very close to passing his half guard.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Jolley in particular looking to stall.

Jolley is looking for a kimura but Marconi is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Jolley to get the leverage.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.

Marconi ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.

Jolley takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.
Jolley uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Marconi.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Jolley checks a leg kick.
Jolley throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Jolley throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Marconi.

Jolley looks for a takedown but Marconi sprawls well.
Marconi thuds a left hand into Jolley's body.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Marconi scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Jolley doesn't seem bothered though.

Jolley paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
Jolley throws a hook to the side of Marconi's head but Marconi sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

No joy there for Jolley, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Manlio Marconi showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

and Marconi counters with a three punch combo that has Jolley backing up. Jolley nods at Marconi to acknowledge the strikes.

A slow jab from Jolley misses its intended target.

Jolley throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Marconi tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Jolley is in Marconi's guard.
Jolley wants to control from the top but Marconi keeps moving.

Jolley postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Marconi is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Jolley, into his guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Jolley tries to land a sweep but no joy.

This has been an exciting period of action!

Marconi wants to stand but Jolley is controlling his posture from full guard.

Jolley has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Marconi can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Manlio Marconi is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Jolley is on top in guard.
Jolley passes Marconi's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Jolley wants to control but Marconi is keeping him busy.
Jolley prevents Marconi from improving his position.

Marconi is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Jolley looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
James Jolley has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Jolley is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Jolley has decided to stand back up but his arm is trapped. Whilst he's worrying about his arm, Marconi works to full guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to James Jolley.
I think Marconi has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Post fight, Manlio Marconi stared into the camera and said 'Thanks everyone who ever cheered or boo'd me, but as I stand here I can't ask for much other than beating this man twice. He's a great fighter and brought out the best of me, but I feel like I'm getting too close to the sun and my arms get tired more easily than in my youth! I've got to go ba'.
