The judges for this bout are Shigeki Sano, Shigeki Fujiwara and Yukihiro Yamamoto.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Newton takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Newton looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Newton stays in close to Akaba's body and controls the position.
Newton decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Newton throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.
Newton manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Akaba on his heels. He'll look to pass Akaba's guard now, I'm sure.
Newton is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Newton wants to pass the guard but Akaba is keeping the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Newton wants to pass the guard but Akaba is keeping the position.
Akaba is working an open guard so Newton takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Newton wants to lay and pray for a moment but Akaba keeps working.
Newton thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Akaba bucks up and tries to throw Newton off but instead Newton has got his back!
Newton connects with a big shot to the side of Akaba's head.
