Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, John John Sosa! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Billy Hooper! The judges for this bout are Konstantin Menshow, Dmitry Maklakov and Aleksei Zolotukhin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Hooper swats away the attempt to clinch by Sosa. Hooper looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight! Sosa scores with a head kick. Hooper tried to block it but didn't get his arm up in time. Sosa drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Sosa happy to just control the position for now. Sosa cracks Hooper with an elbow. That is naaassty. Hooper is not content to let Sosa control the position. Sosa connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Hooper some visible discomfort.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sosa is trying to get an arm triangle but Hooper is defending well. Sosa decides to take the fight back to the feet. Sosa is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Hooper's half guard. Sosa wants to work for an arm triangle but Hooper is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Sosa has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Sosa is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Hooper actively working from the bottom here. Sosa performing his best blanket impression for a moment. Sosa seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Hooper for as long as he can get away with. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
The ref stands the fighters back up. John John Sosa wasn't doing enough on the ground. Sosa pushes Hooper up against the cage in a clinch.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Sosa pulls guard effortlessly. Hooper must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Sosa is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Hooper has his hands clasped together but Sosa extends an breaks Hooper's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Sosa.
