Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jeff Chan! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Michael Russell! The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, George Francis and Tiny Johnson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Russell throws a front kick that sends Chan stumbling back into the cage. Russell tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Chan manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. Chan drives through with a takedown into Russell's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position. If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup. Chan postures up and lands a big shot to Russell's brow. Chan gets to his feet. Russell looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son! Russell fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Chan avoids it really well and circles away. Chan shoots for a takedown but Russell saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Russell shoots and misses and Chan counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Chan with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Chan stopping the sweep attempt from Russell. Russell keeping full guard, as Chan tries to pass.
That's one minute gone in the round. Russell trying to control the position.
Chan stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Russell swivels though and keeps the full guard. Chan wants to stand but Russell has a closed guard, so he can't escape. Russell looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Chan passes into half guard.
Chan is looking for a kimura but Russell is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Chan to get the leverage.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Chan looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. Chan seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Russell for as long as he can get away with. Chan is looking to take a break and control but Russell is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Chan tries to stand but can't do so whilst Russell controls his leg. Chan is thwarting Russell's attempts to control the position. If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup. Chan with the ground and pound but Russell uses the opportunity to regain guard. Russell trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage. Russell keeping full guard, as Chan tries to pass.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Russell keeping moving, preventing Chan from controlling successfully. Russell preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
The ref stands the fighters back up because Jeff Chan just wasn't active enough. Russell shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Chan as he avoids it easily. Jeff Chan has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Michael Russell. Chan gets tackled into the cage by Russell. Russell maintains the clinch. Russell tries to pull guard but Chan holds him up against the cage and eventually Russell drops back down to his feet.
Russell pulls guard effortlessly. Russell looks gassed! Chan trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Chan looking to sit in guard and control but Russell gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Russell is looking to stand up but Chan won't let him. Chan seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now. Russell must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Russell looking to sit in guard and control but Chan gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Chan wants to control from the top but Russell keeps moving. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Chan controls the pace of the fight for a moment. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Jeff Chan dominated that round. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
Nice takedown defense from Chan. No joy for Russell on that attempt. Chan shoots for a takedown but Russell saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Chan throws a combination that misses and Russell counters with an inside leg kick. Russell shoots in for a takedown but Chan shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Russell shoots and misses and Chan counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. Jeff Chan has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Michael Russell. Russell is trying to get back to full guard. Russell is staying active underneath Chan, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Chan tries to pass to full mount but Russell defends it. Chan lands strikes from half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Chan throwing shots but Russell is blocking nicely. Russell is breathing heavily. Chan frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount. Jeff Chan overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. BOOM! Chan connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Russell is squirming around, avoiding Chan's attempts to control the action. Chan is working close to his opponent, looking to work a submission by the looks of things. Oh, he's managed to get a guillotine from mount as his opponent reached up! That looks tiiiiight! Will he tap? YES, he's tapped! Impressive submission by Chan!
