Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
14 - 11 - 1, fighting out of Amsterdam, Baby Jay Penn! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
9 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Anthony Pettis! The judges for this bout are Paulsen Ambrosius, Patrick Alders and Albert Achterberg.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Pettis tries to clinch but fails miserably and Penn counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground. Pettis wants to sweep but no luck. Penn stays in close to Pettis's body and controls the position. Penn decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow. No luck with that takedown attempt from Penn. Penn is trying hard to land a takedown here. Pettis sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Penn fails with a takedown attempt. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Baby Jay Penn. That's going to take a lot out of him. Penn gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Penn breaks from the clinch.
Penn circles away from the clinch attempt and Penn counters by clinching up.
That's one minute gone in the round. A battle for position here, against the cage. A bit of stalling here from Penn.
Pettis is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Penn gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt. Penn is trying to trip Pettis. He has hold of a leg but Pettis is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Penn persists though and gets the takedown into guard. Penn won't allow Pettis to sweep him here. Pettis is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Penn is trying to control but can't.
Pettis has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Penn defend it? Pettis steps over the head and cranks it - Penn is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Pettis!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:56 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Anthony Pettis! After the fight, Anthony Pettis was humble in paying tribute to his opponent but made it clear he wants to go on to bigger and better things. It seemed to go down well with the crowd who cheered him loudly.
