PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Maxwell Hickman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and KC Cooper (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cooper has chosen Renegade by Jay-Z & Eminem as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that KC Cooper was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Maxwell Hickman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, KC Cooper!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Fujiwara, Yukihiro Yamamoto and Ren Mimura.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A jab from Cooper finds it's way through Hickman's defenses.

Cooper gets caught flat footed, as Hickman shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Cooper working for a triangle but Hickman defends it easily.
Hickman trying to move into half guard but instead Cooper has managed to sweep!

Cooper drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Cooper jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Hickman looking for a sweep. Not yet Hickman, not yet.
Cooper stands and throws Hickman's legs to the side, diving into side control.

Cooper goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Hickman rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Cooper's guard! Nice work there by Hickman!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Hickman decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Cooper, up you get!
Hickman fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Cooper avoids it really well and circles away.
Hickman tries to score a power double leg takedown but Cooper sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Hickman somewhat.
Hickman throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Hickman tries to clinch up.
Cooper comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Cooper leaves Hickman with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Maxwell Hickman. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Hickman walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.

Hickman throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Cooper tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Hickman is in Cooper's guard.
Hickman has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Hickman wants to pass the guard but Cooper is keeping the position.

Cooper is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Hickman is aware though and is defending well.

Hickman stands and steps away. Cooper gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Hickman misses with a low kick.
KC Cooper is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Hickman swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Hickman takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.
Hickman rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Cooper moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Hickman closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Cooper to the mat! Cooper manages to get full guard.

Cooper is working an open guard so Hickman takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Hickman has taken the fight to the clinch.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Hickman is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Cooper to keep the fight standing.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hickman pushes Cooper up against the cage in a clinch.
Cooper stalling in the clinch but Hickman improves position.

Hickman has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Cooper regains guard immediately.
Hickman throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Cooper works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Maxwell Hickman overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Hickman stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Cooper swivels though and keeps the full guard.

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Maxwell Hickman has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Hickman throws a right hand that misses
and Cooper connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Hickman misses with a head kick.
Hickman takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.


It looks like Maxwell Hickman has been cut.
Cooper slaps away a takedown attempt from Hickman, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Hickman shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Cooper defends it nicely.

Hickman fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Nice straight punches there by Cooper. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Cooper.
Hickman takes a body punch but keeps moving.

Hickman throws out a loose jab but Cooper uses good head movement to avoid it.
Nice uppercut lands for Cooper. That snapped Hickman's head back.
Cooper cracks Hickman with an open hand slap.
KC Cooper seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Hickman closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Hickman fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Cooper is trying to escape the position but Hickman is controlling the position.
Cooper is not content to let Hickman control the position.

Hickman swings around for an armbar but Cooper sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Hickman's guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Hickman seems keen to control Cooper's posture.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Hickman bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Cooper's guard.
Hickman postures up and lands a big shot to Cooper's brow.
Hickman could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Cooper throws his legs up looking for a submission but Hickman uses it to pass to side control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Maxwell Hickman will probably get the nod.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Cooper connects with a nice looking jab.
Cooper looks to score with a jab to the body but Hickman is just out of range.
Hickman tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Cooper manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Hickman tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Cooper swivels and escapes.
Hickman tries to clinch but Cooper is having none of it.
Cooper throws out a powerful jab.
Cooper cracks Hickman with a good jab.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Hickman is defended easily by Cooper.
Hickman is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Hickman controlling the pace for now.
Hickman avoids the attempt from Cooper to control.
Hickman is landing with some decent strikes but Cooper is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Hickman takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Cooper is wriggling around here but as he tries to escape, Hickman has taken his back.

KC Cooper has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Hickman is trying to stick to Cooper's back but Cooper is turning into Hickman. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Hickman's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Cooper.

Cooper is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Cooper looking to sit in guard and control but Hickman gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Maxwell Hickman is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Hickman slips nicely into half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Maxwell Hickman showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Hickman, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
