0 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Mykka Hoivunen! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Declan Zahradnicek! The judges for this bout are Tatsuya Matsuyama, Kenichi Hosakawa and Yukihiro Shimada.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Hoivunen lands with a kick to the temple. Zahradnicek shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?" Hoivunen misses with a head kick.
Hoivunen misses with a series of wild punches.
Hoivunen moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot. A head kick misses from Hoivunen. Hoivunen walks into a left hand. Hoivunen throws a head kick that misses. Hoivunen gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there. Wow, both these guys are really going for it! Hoivunen throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Zahradnicek loads up on a big right hand but Hoivunen slips the punch. Mykka Hoivunen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Hoivunen gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. Zahradnicek makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Zahradnicek postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. Zahradnicek keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Hoivunen's head. Zahradnicek scores with a decent looking elbow strike. Zahradnicek works over Hoivunen with some ground and pound from guard. Zahradnicek is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound. Hoivunen tries to land a sweep but no joy. Hoivunen has momentary wrist control but Zahradnicek slips an elbow through the middle. Hammerfist, elbow! yells Zahradnicek's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
That's one minute gone in the round. Hoivunen is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Zahradnicek defends well. Zahradnicek stands up over Hoivunen, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. Hoivunen on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Hoivunen tries to get out of the position. Hoivunen has momentary wrist control but Zahradnicek slips an elbow through the middle. Zahradnicek landing some decent shots from guard. Zahradnicek trying to control but Hoivunen is working from the bottom. Hoivunen looking to control.
Zahradnicek tries to free his leg and advance position but Hoivunen is retaining full guard. Hoivunen is looking for a triangle but Zahradnicek pushes his legs off easily.
Zahradnicek landing with the ground and pound. Zahradnicek forces his way into half guard. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Zahradnicek is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Hoivunen is trying to get back to full guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Zahradnicek working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that. Hoivunen tries to kick Zahradnicek off but Zahradnicek keeps his base steady and stays in half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Zahradnicek looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Zahradnicek lands a nice short elbow.
It looks like Mykka Hoivunen has been cut. Zahradnicek looking to pass the half guard. Not this time. Zahradnicek slips a nice elbow through Hoivunen's hands, connecting with Hoivunen's forehead. Zahradnicek drops an elbow to the side of Hoivunen's head. Zahradnicek seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. Zahradnicek lands strikes from half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Zahradnicek prevents Hoivunen from improving his position. The fighters are battling for position here. Hoivunen manages to regain full guard. Nice work. Zahradnicek postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. Hoivunen will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. This has been an exciting period of action! Zahradnicek is in close to Hoivunen's body, working some short punches and elbows. Zahradnicek pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Hoivunen is keeping the position for now. Zahradnicek postures up and lands a big shot to Hoivunen's brow. Zahradnicek is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Zahradnicek cracks Hoivunen with a solid left hand. Hoivunen trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from! Zahradnicek controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Hammerfist, elbow! yells Zahradnicek's corner. There ya go! There ya go! The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Zahradnicek trying to control but Hoivunen is working from the bottom. Hoivunen looking for a sweep. Not yet Hoivunen, not yet. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Zahradnicek is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Declan Zahradnicek dominated that round. The cut man is working on Mykka Hoivunen's cut. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!
Hoivunen tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Zahradnicek is able to avoid easily. Hoivunen doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body. Hoivunen scores with a head kick.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Zahradnicek, as that shot connected.

Hoivunen bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. Zahradnicek throws a jab when Hoivunen was well out of range. Zahradnicek decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Zahradnicek is nestled in close to Hoivunen, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Zahradnicek lands with a punch from half guard. Zahradnicek has been the more effective fighter overall so far. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Zahradnicek working some ground and pound from close in. Jeez, Mykka Hoivunen's cut is really nasty now. The referee must be thinking about getting that checked.
The referee calls the doctor in to look at Mykka Hoivunen's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!
