Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
12 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Hugh Matthews! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
14 - 24 - 1, fighting out of New York, Scott Donavan! The judges for this bout are Chad Campbell, Jorge Garcia and David Schapiro.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Donavan looks to score with a jab to the body but Matthews is just out of range. A nice leg kick lands there from Matthews. Donavan throws out a loose jab but Matthews uses good head movement to avoid it. A jab from Donavan misses. Matthews cracks Donavan with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business. Danga de danga de dang - Matthews scores with a four punch combination! Donavan throws a right hand that Matthews ducks under and follows up with a left that Matthews also avoids with ease. Matthews throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Donavan stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly. Matthews changes levels and scores with a jab to the body. Matthews cracks the inside of Donavan's front leg. This has been an exciting period of action! Donavan swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Donavan ducks right into an uppercut from Matthews. Donavan tries to bum rush Matthews with a series of wild strikes but Matthews uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Donavan takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Donavan shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it. A looping hook to the body misses from Matthews. Donavan does a little dance to reset his feet. Matthews lands a jab to Donavan's midsection. Donavan misses with a series of wild punches.
Matthews catches Donavan with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!
That's one minute gone in the round. Matthews fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Donavan on the side of the head. Donavan will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Nice straight punches there by Matthews. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Matthews. Donavan throws a big shot that misses. Matthews cracks Donavan with a right hand to the side of the head. Matthews dips down and scores with a jab to the body. Donavan looks gassed! Matthews uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook. A looping hook to the body misses from Donavan. Matthews does a little dance to reset his feet. Donavan ducks right into an uppercut from Matthews. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Matthews misses with a few strikes there.
Matthews throws a nice inside leg kick. Matthews digs a good hook to Donavan's body.
Donavan on the wrong end of a nice hook. Matthews scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Matthews connects with a solid leg kick. Matthews jabs Donavan right on the nose. Donavan blinks but takes it well. Matthews closes the distance and clinches. Matthews manages to break the clinch.
Matthews forces Donavan back against the cage and clinches. Matthews breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Matthews fakes a jab and scores with a low kick. Donavan misses with a hook. Matthews throws a leg kick which misses Donavan's front leg but catches the back leg as Donavan tries to avoid it. Matthews closes the distance and clinches. Matthews is trying to trip Donavan. He has hold of a leg but Donavan is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Matthews persists though and gets the takedown into guard. Matthews trying to stand up but can't free himself from Donavan's guard. Matthews gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent. Donavan throws a left and a right that both miss
and Matthews counters with a left to the body.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Matthews dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Donavan. That did some damage! The fight moves into the clinch position. Matthews manages to break the clinch.
Matthews lands a body shot.
Donavan takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Matthews lands with a right hand. Matthews connects with a good right hand that stumbles Donavan. Donavan circles away out of range and recomposes himself. Matthews scores with the left hand. Donavan knows he should have avoided that one. Donavan walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Donavan is rocked! This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Matthews lands hard precision jab right on the jaw that stiffens Donavan up and sends him tumbling to the mat! The ref grabs Matthews from behind before he can pounce. Some folks in the crowd didn't like that stoppage, but I saw Donavan's eyes roll way back in his head, he was done.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:49 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Hugh Matthews! After winning the bout, Hugh Matthews thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
