PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between el Steveo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nick Diaz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Diaz has chosen Senses Fail - War Paint as his entrance music. Nick Diaz has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, el Steveo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Nick Diaz!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Fujiwara, Hirohito Nitta and Shigeki Sano.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Steveo closes the distance and clinches up with Diaz, looking for a takedown. Steveo pushes Diaz against the cage but Diaz circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Diaz throws a nice looking combination but Steveo bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Steveo drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Steveo is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Diaz working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Steveo.
Steveo throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Diaz works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Diaz is wriggling around but Steveo manages to pass to half guard.
Steveo thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Diaz's head.
Steveo is looking to advance position but Diaz won't allow it.

Diaz has hold of Steveo's hands but Steveo slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Steveo throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Steveo decides to stand and escape the position.

Diaz gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Steveo to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Steveo pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Diaz is keeping the position for now.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Diaz is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Steveo stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Diaz swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Steveo loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

el Steveo dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Steveo.
Nick Diaz is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Steveo shoots for a takedown but Diaz saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Diaz throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Steveo fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Diaz sprawls well initially but Steveo persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Diaz is trying to stand back up but Steveo is controlling him

Diaz really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Steveo. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Steveo decides to stand and escape the position.

Diaz gets caught napping as Steveo dives in and scores a takedown. Diaz manages to retain guard.
Diaz wants to get back to his feet but Steveo is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Steveo stands and steps away. Diaz gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Steveo scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Steveo working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Steveo throws a strike aimed at the side of Diaz's head but Diaz avoids it well.

el Steveo overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Diaz is trying to buck Steveo off.

Steveo decides to stand back up. Steveo steps back and let's Diaz get back to his feet.
Left hook, right uppercut from Diaz.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Steveo scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Steveo winds up and cracks Diaz with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Steveo throwing shots but Diaz is blocking nicely.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

el Steveo dominated that second round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Diaz throws a right hand that Steveo ducks under and follows up with a left that Steveo also avoids with ease.
el Steveo is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Diaz throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Steveo.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Diaz keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Diaz stuffs the takedown attempt from Steveo. Steveo gets slowly back to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for el Steveo. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Steveo fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Diaz stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Diaz wants it to stay on the feet.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

el Steveo showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Steveo, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
