PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between B J Sherk (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tony Smiff (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Sherk comes to the cage accompanied by E Ala E. Tony Smiff will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, B J Sherk!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Tony Smiff!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, James Atkins and Steven Brown.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Sherk decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Sherk stops Smiff from getting back to his feet.
Sherk is pressing down on Smiff's thigh, looking to free his foot. Smiff is holding on for now.
Smiff is looking for a sweep. Sherk is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Smiff slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Smiff keeping moving, preventing Sherk from controlling successfully.
Sherk sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Smiff's guard.
Sherk is tying to control. Smiff wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Sherk thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Sherk content to control rather than advance.

Sherk seems to be working for a kimura but Smiff defends the submission attempt.

Sherk is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Smiff has managed to free his arm - good work.
Smiff is staying active underneath Sherk, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Sherk passes to full mount!

Sherk is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Smiff has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Smiff!
Sherk is breathing heavily.
Smiff postures up.

Smiff stands and steps away. Sherk gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Sherk gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Smiff breaks from the clinch.

No luck for Sherk with that takedown attempt.
Sherk shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
The fight stays on the outside here - Smiff looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Smiff buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Sherk throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Smiff's waist but Smiff gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Sherk off to one side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for B J Sherk. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Smiff feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Sherk's calf.
Sherk lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Smiff backs up against the cage.

Smiff tries to keep at a distance but Sherk has taken the fight into the clinch.
Sherk fails to pull guard.
Smiff wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Sherk using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Smiff has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Sherk is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Smiff wants to break free but Sherk has control.

Smiff jumps guard and drags Sherk to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Sherk wants to control from the top but Smiff keeps moving.

Sherk gets to his feet. Smiff looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Sherk has taken the fight to the clinch.
Smiff is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Sherk tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Smiff smiles and moves away.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Sherk jumps into guard, dragging Smiff to the mat.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Sherk is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Sherk has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Smiff can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Sherk wants to sweep here but Smiff controlling him for the moment.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Sherk working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Smiff doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Smiff manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Smiff gets to his feet. Sherk looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Sherk tries to pull guard but Smiff holds him up against the cage and eventually Sherk drops back down to his feet.

Sherk successfully pulls guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Sherk is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Sherk has a closed guard, preventing Smiff from standing up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Tony Smiff will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action!



Smiff shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Smiff showed some decent athleticism there.

Smiff postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Sherk to stand up.
Smiff will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Smiff fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Sherk.
Sherk closes the distance and lands a one-two.

Smiff closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Smiff prevents the takedown attempt.

Sherk successfully pulls guard.
Sherk is trying to control the position but Smiff postures up.
Sherk keeping moving, preventing Smiff from controlling successfully.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Sherk escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Smiff gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Smiff passes Sherk's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Sherk is looking for a sweep. Smiff is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Sherk pushes Smiff off looking to stand but Smiff dives back in and keeps control.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Smiff wants to take a breather but Sherk is having none of it.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Sherk misses with a looping right.
Sherk scores with a nice right hand.
Sherk scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Smiff doesn't seem bothered though.
Sherk fails with an attempt to clinch.
An inside leg kick lands from Smiff.
Sherk walks forward, straight into a front kick from Smiff.
Sherk looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Smiff is fending him off so far but Sherk persists. Nope, Smiff circles away and we're back to standing.

Sherk gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Sherk manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Smiff manages to get himself to full guard.
Sherk forces his way into half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Sherk tries to pass the half guard into mount. Smiff knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Sherk frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Sherk has control of Smiff's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Smiff regains control of the situation pretty easily.

Sherk working for a submission but Smiff is keeping him at bay.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Sherk trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Sherk fails to move to back control.

Sherk is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Smiff has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Smiff!

Sherk looking to hit a scissor sweep but Smiff is one step ahead there.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tony Smiff showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Sherk dodges the punch combination from Smiff.
Smiff moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
Sherk tries to close the distance and clinch but Smiff swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Sherk throws the left hand but Smiff avoids the punch easily.
Smiff throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
Sherk just misses with a punch to the body.
Smiff wants to clinch but Sherk slips to the side

and Sherk counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Smiff!

Smiff defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Sherk.
Sherk avoids the attempt from Smiff to control.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Smiff tries to hold on but Sherk pushes him away.
Smiff is trying to stand.
Sherk avoids the attempt from Smiff to control.

Sherk has hold of Smiff's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Smiff manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Sherk looking to control but Smiff is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Sherk looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Sherk wants to control the pace but Smiff is squirming around nicely.
Sherk is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Smiff is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Sherk looking to secure an arm triangle but Smiff defends it well.

Sherk is working for a guillotine from mount but Smiff frees his head quite easily.
Smiff is desperately trying to improve his position but Sherk has a good base and remains in mount.

Sherk in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.

Sherk pushing the pace here, looking to move to his opponents back and work for a finish.
Smiff is looking to get to half guard.

Smiff tries to hold on but Sherk pushes him away.
B J Sherk has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Sherk jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Smiff is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Smiff and Sherk has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Smiff is pushing Sherk's head away, looking to escape. Sherk manages to hold on to the position though.
Sherk trying to control the action but Smiff is working from the bottom.
Sherk tries to score with some ground and pound. Smiff controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Sherk misses with the ground and pound.
Smiff manages to work his way to half guard, despite Sherk's best efforts.
Sherk not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to B J Sherk.
I think Smiff has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
