Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Patrick Whales! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Anthony Johnson! The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Don Winkell and Jack Bonds.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Whales clinches. A short right from Whales on the inside. Johnson wants a takedown.
Whales lands with a short punch from the clinch.
A right hand to the body from Whales.
Johnson wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Whales pushes Johnson back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head. Whales cracks Johnson with a nice body shot. Whales lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage. Johnson misses with a hook from the clinch. Whales lands with a right to the head. Johnson jumps guard but Whales stands there with Johnson around his waist. Johnson gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Whales gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Johnson.
Patrick Whales has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Anthony Johnson. Whales scores with a hook to the body.

Whales working on landing some head shots here - that one got through nicely. Johnson wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Whales has him pressed against the cage. A body shot lands from Whales.

Johnson is rocked! Whales lands with a short punch from the clinch.
Johnson is still on wobbly legs! Can Whales finish him? Johnson tries to pull guard but Whales forces him back to his feet, against the cage. Whales gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Johnson.
Johnson seems to have recovered his senses. A body shot lands from Whales.
Johnson looks gassed! A hook to the body from Whales.
A nice right hand lands inside from Whales.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Good body shot from Whales.
Johnson is trying to push Whales away but Whales has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere. Whales has picked Johnson up - he's going for a ride! Whales dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Whales works his foot free and advances to mount. Whales postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Johnson looks a forlorn figure.
Whales has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Whales loads up with a big shot that hurts Johnson! He's pulled Whales in close but Whales has postured up and lands more strikes. Can Johnson survive? More strikes from Whales and Johnson is out! The ref jumps in to save him! Brutal ground and pound!
