PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Mamed Khalidov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nic Blackwell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Mamed Khalidov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Nic Blackwell!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, John Mangel and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Khalidov stuffs the takedown.
Blackwell closes the distance and clinches up with Khalidov, looking for a takedown. Blackwell pushes Khalidov against the cage but Khalidov circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Khalidov shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.

Blackwell drives through and clinches with Khalidov against the cage.

Khalidov breaks from the clinch.
Blackwell doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Khalidov decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Blackwell's guard.
Mamed Khalidov has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Nic Blackwell.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Blackwell wants to sweep but no luck.
Khalidov trying to control the position from guard on top but Blackwell is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Khalidov looking to sit in guard and control but Blackwell gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Khalidov seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Khalidov is looking for a triangle but Blackwell pushes his legs off easily.
Blackwell wants to control from the top but Khalidov keeps moving.
Khalidov looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Blackwell works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Blackwell keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Khalidov is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Khalidov is looking to improve his position.
Blackwell wants to control but Khalidov is keeping him busy.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Blackwell lands a nice short elbow.

Khalidov lands with a few short shots to the body.
Khalidov moves into full guard.
Khalidov is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Blackwell won't allow Khalidov to get back to his feet.
Khalidov is breathing heavily.
Blackwell wants to control from the top but Khalidov keeps moving.
Khalidov wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Blackwell is now in half guard.
Khalidov is looking for a sweep. Blackwell is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Khalidov trying to hold on to Blackwell's head to control him but Blackwell postures up.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Blackwell throwing shots but Khalidov is blocking nicely.
Blackwell thows a huge punch but Khalidov dodges it nicely.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Mamed Khalidov will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Blackwell will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Blackwell is looking to clinch but Khalidov is avoiding it.
Nice takedown defense from Khalidov. No joy for Blackwell on that attempt.

Blackwell gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Khalidov wants a takedown.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Khalidov takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.

Khalidov pulls Blackwell into guard.
Khalidov looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Blackwell wants to control from the top but Khalidov keeps moving.

Blackwell might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Khalidov kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Nic Blackwell hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Khalidov stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Khalidov wants it to stay on the feet.

Khalidov closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Blackwell did well to prevent Khalidov getting side control.
Blackwell has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Khalidov is working away from the top position though.

Khalidov postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Blackwell to stand up.
Khalidov fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Blackwell avoids it really well and circles away.
No joy there for Blackwell, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Khalidov misses with a kick to the body.
Khalidov scores with a three punch combo!
Blackwell shoots in for a takedown but Khalidov shows good takedown defense.
Mamed Khalidov has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Nic Blackwell.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Blackwell drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Blackwell working the strikes but Khalidov uses the opportunity to regain half guard.
Blackwell wants to lay and pray for a moment but Khalidov keeps working.
The fighters are battling for position here. Khalidov manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Blackwell postures up.
Blackwellis looking to pass into half guard but Khalidov pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Khalidov is in guard.
Khalidov is in close to Blackwell's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Blackwell keeping moving, preventing Khalidov from controlling successfully.
Mamed Khalidov overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Blackwell is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Blackwell is looking to get back to full guard here but Khalidov has managed to pass to side control instead.

That was a close second round but I would say that Mamed Khalidov will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Blackwell blocks a jab.

Khalidov gets caught napping as Blackwell dives in and scores a takedown. Khalidov manages to retain guard.

Khalidov manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Blackwell manages to get himself to full guard.

Blackwell takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Khalidov wants to control from the top but Blackwell keeps moving.

Blackwell manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Khalidov tries to hold on but Blackwell pushes him away.
Khalidov wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Blackwell.
Khalidov is in all sorts of trouble here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Blackwell blocks Khalidov's feeble attempts to strike from the bottom.
Blackwell thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage.

Khalidov is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Blackwell can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Khalidov is looking to escape.
Khalidov might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Blackwell controlling the position easily from mount.
Nic Blackwell has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Mamed Khalidov is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Blackwell avoids the attempt from Khalidov to control.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Nic Blackwell.
I think Khalidov has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
