Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Chad Griggs! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Bobby Tate! The judges for this bout are Jonathan Paton, Bruno Lombardi and Russell Pearce.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Tate shoots in and drives through. Griggs sprawls well. Tate fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Griggs avoids it really well and circles away. Griggs fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Tate fails with a takedown attempt. Chad Griggs has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Bobby Tate. Tate looking to score a takedown here. Griggs is defending well but Tate drives through and ends up in Griggs's guard. Tate wants to control from the top but Griggs keeps moving. Tate prevents Griggs from getting back to his feet. Tate with a flurry of punches that miss.
That's one minute gone in the round. Griggs wants to stand but Tate is controlling the position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Tate postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. Tate trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Tate pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Griggs is keeping the position for now. Tate has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Griggs wants to stand up but Tate is controlling him. Griggs has his feet on Tate's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Griggs shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Griggs showed some decent athleticism there. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Griggs thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. The fighters are battling for position here. Tate manages to regain full guard. Nice work. Tate is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Griggs is aware though and is defending well. Griggs missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Griggs has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Griggs throws a big right hand that misses. Griggs throws a big elbow that misses. Griggs postures up and lands a big shot to Tate's brow. Griggs wants to control from the top but Tate keeps moving. Tate is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Griggs has his hands clasped together but Tate extends an breaks Griggs's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Tate.
