PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Aaron Rafferty (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Keating (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rafferty kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Enter Shikari - Sorry You're Not A Winner. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Aaron Rafferty!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, John Keating!
The judges for this bout are William Gold, Chris Edwards and Richard Clark.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Keating takes a head kick and keeps coming.
Keating misses with a low kick.

Rafferty shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Keating napping and manages to drive through into side control!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Rafferty moves into full mount!

Rafferty has control of Keating's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Keating regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Keating tries to hold on but Rafferty postures up.
Keating manages to regain half guard. Good work.
Rafferty wants to free his trapped foot but Keating is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Rafferty prevents Keating from improving his position.

Keating gets back to full guard.
Rafferty trying to control the position from guard on top but Keating is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Keating is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Rafferty is aware though and is defending well.
Rafferty might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Keating has a closed guard, preventing Rafferty from standing up.
Keating seems keen to control Rafferty's posture.

Rafferty gets to his feet - Keating follows without any prompting.
Nice takedown defense from Keating. No joy for Rafferty on that attempt.

Keating gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Keating escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Rafferty takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Rafferty is breathing heavily.

Keating moves into range and clinches up with Rafferty.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Rafferty wants a takedown but no success here.

Keating gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Rafferty regains guard.
Keating tries to stand but Rafferty is controlling from the bottom.

Keating lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Keating is pushing down on Rafferty's leg trying to pass to half guard. Rafferty is fighting to maintain full guard but Keating has managed to sneak the leg through.

Keating seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Keating controlling the pace.
Keating wants to stand up but Rafferty is controlling the position.
Rafferty avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Keating.
Rafferty has hold of Keating's hands but Keating slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Keating tries to pass to full mount but Rafferty defends it.
Keating is thwarting Rafferty's attempts to control the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Keating dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Rafferty tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Keating paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Keating bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Keating cracks Rafferty with an elbow. That is naaassty.

Keating fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Keating wants to take a breather but Rafferty manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Keating.
Keating lands a couple of decent looking shots.

Keating would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Keating looking to pass the guard.
Keating really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Rafferty. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Keating won't allow Rafferty to sweep him here.
Rafferty is trying to keep Keating in close.
Rafferty keeping moving, preventing Keating from controlling successfully.

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

John Keating has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Rafferty drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Keating gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Keating has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Rafferty is trying to keep an underhook but Keating manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Keating drops an elbow to the side of Rafferty's head.

Keating stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.

and Rafferty counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Keating's guard now.
Keating wants to stand but Rafferty is controlling the position.
Rafferty wants to control from the top but Keating keeps moving.
Rafferty is fighting to break Keating's control of his arms but Keating is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Rafferty trying to control but Keating is working from the bottom.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Aaron Rafferty just wasn't active enough.

Keating moves into the clinch.
Keating is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Rafferty is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.

Rafferty turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Rafferty manages to end up in side control.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Keating stops Rafferty from passing to mount.
Keating wants to control but Rafferty postures up.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Rafferty wants to lay and pray for a moment but Keating keeps working.
Keating holds on to Rafferty's head and controls the position momentarily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Keating showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Keating is trying to trip Rafferty. He has hold of a leg but Rafferty is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Keating persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Keating must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Keating postures up in Rafferty's guard and throws a big left but Rafferty blocks it.

Keating stands up and waves to Rafferty to follow him.
Keating tries for a takedown but Rafferty sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Rafferty shoots in but Keating avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Rafferty defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Keating.

Keating gets a double leg takedown into Rafferty's guard.
Rafferty is trying to control the position but Keating postures up.
John Keating has got the better of the ground game so far.
Rafferty is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Keating is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Keating controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Aaron Rafferty.

Keating closes the distance and pushes Rafferty back into the cage.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

John Keating comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Keating has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
