PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Matthew Thompson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mike Boldsly (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys are coming into the fight with injuries so let's see if that has a bearing on the fight. Man, I cannot wait for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Matthew Thompson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Mike Boldsly!
The judges for this bout are Chris Saunders, Roger Salmon and Jeff Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Thompson shoots in for a takedown but Boldsly shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Thompson is breathing heavily.
Boldsly closes the distance and clinches up with Thompson, looking for a takedown. Boldsly pushes Thompson against the cage but Thompson circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Thompson fails with a takedown attempt.

Boldsly drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Thompson is being controlled here.
Boldsly wants to control but Thompson is keeping him busy.
Boldsly is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Thompson will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.
Let's hope that Boldsly has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Boldsly is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Thompson knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Boldsly lands a decent elbow from side control.
Boldsly moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.

Boldsly thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Thompson's head.

Boldsly stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Thompson to get to his feet.
Boldsly throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Boldsly lands a nice looking body kick.
Boldsly throws a sloppy head kick and Thompson moves out of range easily.
Boldsly leaves Thompson with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Matthew Thompson. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Boldsly shoots in for a takedown but Thompson shows good takedown defense.

Thompson looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Boldsly is fending him off so far but Thompson persists. Nope, Boldsly circles away and we're back to standing.
Thompson stuffs the takedown attempt from Boldsly. Boldsly gets slowly back to his feet.

Thompson throws a nice looking combination but Boldsly bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Boldsly misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Thompson enables Boldsly to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Thompson manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Thompson wants to stand and escape but Boldsly is having none of it.
Boldsly trying to control the position from guard on top but Thompson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Thompson throws a sloppy head kick and Boldsly moves out of range easily.

Boldsly has managed to clinch.

Boldsly breaks from the clinch.
Boldsly with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.

Thompson has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Boldsly is proving hard to escape from.
Boldsly is wriggling around but Thompson manages to pass to half guard.
Boldsly keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Thompson stops Boldsly from getting back to his feet.
Boldsly is trying to control but can't.
Thompson controlling the pace.

Boldsly looks like he's trying to stand up.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Matthew Thompson just wasn't active enough.
A solid leg kick lands there for Thompson.
Thompson throws a low kick, looking for Boldsly's leg but Boldsly calmly moves out of range.
Matthew Thompson is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Thompson tries for a takedown but Boldsly sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Thompson tries to score a power double leg takedown but Boldsly sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Thompson somewhat.

Thompson moves into the clinch.

Both guys are working to get underhooks.
Boldsly can't get the takedown.

Thompson breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Thompson slaps away a takedown attempt from Boldsly, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Thompson swats away the attempt to clinch by Boldsly.

Thompson drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Thompson wants to control from the top but Boldsly keeps moving.
Thompson looking to sit in guard and control but Boldsly gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Thompson pushes Boldsly off and scrambles back to his feet.

Thompson throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Boldsly was covering up waiting for the punch and Thompson finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Boldsly changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Thompson looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Thompson tries to improve position but can't.
Thompson is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
Thompson is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Thompson is trying to buck Boldsly off.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
You can see the frustration on Thompson's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Thompson knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Boldsly on the ground.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Thompson takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position.
Boldsly lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Thompson hang on?

Boldsly looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Thompson is fending him off so far but Boldsly persists. Nope, Thompson circles away and we're back to standing.

Thompson postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Boldsly is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Thompson, into his guard.

Well Boldsly has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
