Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Michael Santos Kazashi! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Stephen Thompson! The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Mauricio Rocha and Edson Gomes.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Thompson leaves Santos Kazashi with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Thompson swats away the attempt to clinch by Santos Kazashi. Thompson feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Santos Kazashi is breathing heavily. Santos Kazashi throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land. Thompson trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Santos Kazashi keeping moving, preventing Thompson from controlling successfully. Thompson stands up over Santos Kazashi, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. Thompson tries to free his leg and advance position but Santos Kazashi is retaining full guard. Thompson sitting in guard, not really doing much. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Thompson accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Thompson is looking to work some ground and pound but Santos Kazashi has wrist control. Santos Kazashi keeping moving, preventing Thompson from controlling successfully.
That's one minute gone in the round. Santos Kazashi looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Santos Kazashi working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Thompson doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Santos Kazashi is tightening it up a little... Thompson has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Thompson reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Thompson taps out! Nice BJJ there by Santos Kazashi!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:30 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Choke). Michael Santos Kazashi! Michael Santos Kazashi decided to hype himself up post fight. It was going well but he went on about it a bit too long and the crowd turned on him a little.
