The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Patrick shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Essex swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Essex clinches up with Patrick and pushes him back against the cage.
Essex misses with the head strike.
Essex throws a head punch that misses.

Essex lands on the inside with an uppercut.
Patrick is trying to break free.
Essex stays in close to his opponent and throws a right hand to the body.
Essex lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down Patrick.
Patrick wants a takedown.
Patrick fails to pull guard.

Patrick postures up in Essex's guard and throws a big left but Essex blocks it.
Essex wants to get back to his feet but Patrick is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Patrick tries to free his leg and advance position but Essex is retaining full guard.

Patrick is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Essex is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Patrick is aware though and is defending well.
Patrick landing with the ground and pound.
Patrick drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Essex dives on top into guard.
Essex really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Patrick. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Patrick is trying to keep Essex in close.

Essex wants to get up but he can't break Patrick's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Patrick is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Essex defends well.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Patrick is on top in guard.

Essex is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Patrick thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Essex is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Patrick drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Patrick jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Giri Essex will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
Patrick looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Essex is fending him off so far but Patrick persists. Nope, Essex circles away and we're back to standing.

Essex gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Patrick is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Essex sees it coming and defends easily.

Evan Patrick really struggled to get his t-shirt on before his hand was raised. Making sure that GTI - 1337 sponsors VERSUS logo gets some air time is pretty tricky when you're all sweaty.
