Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Thiago Alvez! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Matt Rodrigo! The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Paulo Santos and Emerson Jorge.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Alvez keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Alvez tries for a takedown but Rodrigo circles away easily and Rodrigo counters with a slapping leg kick. Alvez bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Alvez happy to just control the position for now. Rodrigo really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Alvez. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. You can see the frustration on Rodrigo's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Rodrigo is letting Alvez control him for a moment. Alvez working away. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Rodrigo tries to bench press Alvez off him but Alvez keeps the position. Rodrigo seems a little lost for a moment, as Alvez dominates the positioning. Alvez is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Rodrigo has escaped the position, nice work there.
That's one minute gone in the round. Alvez content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though. Alvez is looking to take a break and control but Rodrigo is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Alvez is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Rodrigo is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Rodrigo is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Alvez off and has taken his back!
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Rodrigo is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Alvez knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Alvez for a finish. Even with his hooks in, Rodrigo manages to miss with strikes from the back. Rodrigo is working hard for the rear naked choke here.

Alvez manages to reverse the position and now he's in Rodrigo's guard. Nice work there by Alvez.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Alvez wants to pass the guard but Rodrigo is keeping the position.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Alvez misses with a takedown attempt and Rodrigo counters into the clinch. Nicely done. Rodrigo manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back. Alvez avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Alvez controls the pace of the fight for a moment. Rodrigo keeping moving, preventing Alvez from controlling successfully. Alvez won't allow Rodrigo to get back to his feet.
That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Rodrigo can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Alvez controls the pace. Rodrigo is looking for a triangle but Alvez pushes his legs off easily.
Rodrigo can't keep his opponent in guard - Alvez advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Rodrigo is looking for a sweep. Alvez is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Thiago Alvez will probably get the nod. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Rodrigo shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Rodrigo was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Alvez is wriggling around trying to escape.
Rodrigo landing strikes from the mount. Rodrigo tries to control but Alvez wriggling away. Rodrigo gets to his feet and calls his opponent to stand. Here come the fireworks! Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Rodrigo is looking to clinch but Alvez is avoiding it.
Rodrigo misses with a takedown attempt and Alvez counters with a takedown into side control. Rodrigo is looking to regain half guard here but Alvez keeps moving and retains side control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rodrigo struggling a bit here. Rodrigo tries to improve position but can't. Rodrigo wants to get back to his feet. Rodrigo being controlled for a moment.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Alvez has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Rodrigo! Alvez looking to control and managing it successfully. Rodrigo working to try and regain half guard.
Alvez content just to control the position here. Rodrigo regains half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Rodrigo gets full guard. Rodrigo keeping full guard, as Alvez tries to pass. Rodrigo is trying to keep Alvez in close.
Alvez stays in close to Rodrigo's body and controls the position. Alvez passes into half guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Alvez is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Rodrigo is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Alvez scores with a couple of nice shots. Alvez passes to full mount! Alvez controlling the pace for now. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close second round but I would say that Thiago Alvez will probably get the nod. That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!
Alvez scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Alvez taking a breather here. Rodrigo stops Alvez from passing to mount. Rodrigo takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Alvez taking a breather here.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Thiago Alvez just wasn't active enough from the dominant position. Rodrigo gets caught flat footed, as Alvez shoots in with a quick takedown into guard. Rodrigo is trying to keep Alvez in close.
Alvez looking to sit in guard and control but Rodrigo gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Alvez controlling the position. Rodrigo must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Rodrigo trying to control the position from guard on top but Alvez is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Alvez controlling Rodrigo's posture. Alvez looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Alvez is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Alvez keeping busy on the bottom but Rodrigo has passed one foot through into half guard.

Alvez makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Alvez. Alvez pulls Rodrigo in close to his closed guard and prevents Rodrigo from doing any damage or advancing position. Alvez looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Alvez wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now. Alvez's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

And that's the end of the fight! Thiago Alvez showed his dominance in that final round. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Alvez, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
