The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sams tries to clinch but Patrick moves out of range.
Sams takes one on the button.
Patrick feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Sams's calf.
Sams takes one on the chin but seems OK.

Patrick tries to keep at a distance but Sams has taken the fight into the clinch.

Sams decides to pull guard.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Patrick tries to stand but Sams is controlling from the bottom.

Sams's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Patrick connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Sams scrambles back to his feet.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Sams takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Patrick goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Sams has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Patrick can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Patrick decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Sams fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Patrick, pushing him back against the cage.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Sams lands a left hand.
Sams tries to pull guard but Patrick won't allow it.
Patrick wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Sams has him pressed against the cage.
Sams goes for a takedown in the clinch but Patrick prevents it.

Sams jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Patrick walks away with a smile on his face. Sams gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Patrick leaves Sams with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Claude Patrick showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Sams has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Patrick finds it's way round the side to connect with Sams's head.

Patrick lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Sams circles away quickly and effectively.

Sams changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Patrick tries to avoid it but Sams manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Patrick to the ground. Patrick escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
