Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, James Miller! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Alberto Del Rio! The judges for this bout are James Glass, Colin Fotheringham and James Atkins.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Del Rio closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Miller quickly recovers to half guard. Del Rio missing with the ground and pound from half guard. Del Rio is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Miller keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Del Rio in particular looking to stall. Miller tries to roll over but Del Rio keeps him under control. Miller controlling the leg, holding on to half guard. Del Rio controlling the pace. Del Rio thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Miller gets full guard. Miller pulls Del Rio in close to prevent any damage. Miller might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Del Rio pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Miller is keeping the position for now.
That's one minute gone in the round. Del Rio sitting in guard, not really doing much.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Miller gets caught napping as Del Rio dives in and scores a takedown. Miller manages to retain guard. Del Rio preventing the sweep. Del Rio wants to pass the guard but Miller is keeping the position. Del Rio with a flurry of punches that miss. Del Rio won't allow Miller to sweep him here. Del Rio controlling from the top position. Miller controls Del Rio momentarily but Del Rio frees himself.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Miller controlling Del Rio's posture. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. Del Rio controls the pace of the fight for a moment. Del Rio must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
We're going to have a standup here because James Miller wasn't active enough for the referee's liking. Miller throws a push kick but Del Rio slaps the foot to one side. A momentary lapse in concentration from Miller enables Del Rio to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Miller manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Miller is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Del Rio is controlling Miller's position as best he can from this difficult position. Miller is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Del Rio! Miller wants to control the pace but Del Rio is squirming around nicely. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Del Rio can do anything to dispel that myth. Miller lands a heavy elbow. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Del Rio is trying desperately to improve position. Miller controlling from mount. Del Rio tries to lock up and control but Miller gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Del Rio is squirming around, avoiding Miller's attempts to control the action. Miller working for a guillotine from mount but Del Rio is in no mood to give up. Miller postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Del Rio looks a forlorn figure.
Miller sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Del Rio tries to reverse the position but Miller maintains control. Del Rio looks gassed! Del Rio avoids a series of strikes thrown by Miller.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Miller pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Miller avoids the attempt from Del Rio to control. Del Rio tries to reverse the position but Miller maintains control. Miller cracks Del Rio with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Miller lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.
Miller has control of Del Rio's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Del Rio regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Miller is landing with some decent strikes but Del Rio is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Del Rio is rocked! Miller is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Del Rio has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Miller cracks Del Rio with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Del Rio in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head. Miller can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Del Rio is looking to escape. Del Rio is looking to get to half guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
James Miller dominated that round. Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!
Del Rio takes a body punch but keeps moving. Del Rio shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Miller keeping moving, preventing Del Rio from controlling successfully. Miller has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Miller controlling Del Rio's posture. If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup. Del Rio trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
OK we're going to have a standup here. Alberto Del Rio hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart. Miller listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut. Miller looks to score with a jab to the body but Del Rio is just out of range. Miller is trying hard to land a takedown here. Del Rio sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
That's one minute gone in the round. Del Rio shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Del Rio is breathing heavily. Miller wants to get back to full guard but Del Rio has passed into side control. Miller is not content to let Del Rio control the position. Miller gets back to half guard. Del Rio thows a huge punch but Miller dodges it nicely.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Del Rio is figuring out what he wants to do next. Miller tries to get to full guard but Del Rio has control of the leg. Miller is trying to control but can't.
Still in half guard, Del Rio seems content to control. Miller is concentrating on defense, preventing Del Rio from advancing position.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Miller misses with a hook. Del Rio ducked under it nicely. Del Rio fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Miller to the ground. Del Rio is now in Miller's guard. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Miller is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Miller keeping moving, preventing Del Rio from controlling successfully. Miller manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Miller tries to control but Del Rio wriggling away. Miller lands a big elbow. Miller with a couple of short strikes. Del Rio is desperately trying to improve his position but Miller has a good base and remains in mount. Miller scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Del Rio is still in real trouble! Can Miller finish him? Del Rio takes a big shot to the dome and his eyes have rolled back in his head! Miller's killer instinct has kicked in as he finishes the fight with more strikes. Impressive finish.
