PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Yori Boyka (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Alexander Popov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Yori Boyka!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Alexander Popov!
The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Daniel Cesar and Luis Engracia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Popov shoots for a double leg takedown but Boyka sprawls well. He's pushed Popov's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Boyka throws a series of punches but Popov avoids them all with ease.
Popov misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

Boyka closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Popov is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Boyka asserts his dominance and retains side control.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Boyka manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
Boyka bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Popov's guard.
Popov is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Popov is working an open guard so Boyka takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Popov is looking to clinch.
Popov throws a push kick but Boyka slaps the foot to one side.
Boyka throws a lazy head kick
and Popov makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Boyka really felt that one!
Boyka is breathing heavily.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Popov throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Boyka's waist but Boyka gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Popov off to one side.
Yori Boyka has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Alexander Popov.

Boyka takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Popov stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Popov wants it to stay on the feet.
Boyka cracks Popov with a right hand to the side of the head.
Boyka tries to score a power double leg takedown but Popov sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Boyka somewhat.

Popov throws a half hearted mid kick.
Popov thuds a mid kick into his opponent's body. That will wear on Boyka if he has to take too many more of those.
Crunch! Popov slams his shin into Boyka's torso.
Boyka defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Popov.
Boyka connects with a body shot that sends Popov's belly button to the back.
Boyka looks to land a combination. Popov sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.

Boyka drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Popov is pushing Boyka's head away, looking to escape. Boyka manages to hold on to the position though.

Boyka decides to stand back up. Boyka steps back and let's Popov get back to his feet.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Boyka throws a combination that misses
and Popov makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.
Boyka avoids a kick to the body.

Boyka moves into the clinch.

Popov manages to break the clinch.
Boyka tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Popov pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Boyka shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Popov eats them both and turns towards Boyka to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
Popov throws a wild body kick that Boyka sees coming a mile off.

Boyka gets in close and instigates a clinch.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Boyka tries a body shot but Popov blocks it.
Boyka wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Popov has him pressed against the cage.
Boyka tries to pull guard but Popov forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Boyka wants to land a leg kick but Popov is out of range.
Boyka misses with a jab to the body
and Popov makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Boyka really felt that one!

Popov closes the distance and clinches.
Popov connects with a knee to the head.
Boyka is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.

Popov pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Nice body kick from Popov.
Popov looks for the body kick but Boyka saw that one coming.
Popov will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Popov misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Popov shoots in for a takedown but Boyka shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Boyka shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Boyka was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Popov is in a horrible position here. Boyka smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.

Boyka drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Boyka passes Popov's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Boyka wants to control for a moment but Popov uses the opportunity to move back to half guard.
Popov is in trouble now - Boyka has advanced to mount!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Boyka postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Popov looks a forlorn figure.

Boyka fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!

Boyka tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Boyka won't let Popov get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now.

Yori Boyka showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Boyka, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
