PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Shane Griffin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Freddy Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Griffin's entrance music is Wait and Bleed by Slipknot. A fine choice. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Shane Griffin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Freddy Smith!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith throws a leg kick but Griffin moved away.
Griffin moves out of range as Smith strikes.
Smith shoots in and drives through. Griffin sprawls well.
Smith changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Griffin tries to avoid it but Smith manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Griffin to the ground. Griffin escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Smith takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.


It looks like Freddy Smith has been cut.

Smith drives through with a takedown into Griffin's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Smith throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Griffin works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Smith seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Griffin does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Smith thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Griffin's head.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Smith breaks from Griffin's wrist control and lands an elbow.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Griffin's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Smith tests Griffin's chin there with a solid looking shot.
Smith shoots for a double leg takedown but Griffin sprawls well. He's pushed Smith's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Smith missing with a left hand there. Griffin was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Smith shoots in looking for a takedown. Griffin tries to sprawl out of it but Smith keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Griffin manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Smith fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Smith looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Griffin is fending him off so far but Smith persists. Nope, Griffin circles away and we're back to standing.

Smith shoots in but no luck this time.
Griffin cracks Smith with a good jab.
Griffin lands a body shot.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Smith is defended easily by Griffin.
Griffin loads up on a big right hand but Smith slips the punch.

Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Smith shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Smith misses with a few strikes there.
Smith darts in trying to clinch
and Smith takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Shane Griffin dominated that second round.
The cut man is working on Freddy Smith's cut.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


Smith shoots for a takedown but Griffin saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Shane Griffin is winning the standup battle so far.

Smith has Griffin up against the cage in a clinch.
Smith drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Smith lands with a light punch inside.

Smith breaks from the clinch.
The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Smith. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.
Smith fails with the takedown.
Shane Griffin has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Freddy Smith.

Griffin moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.


That has opened up Freddy Smith's cut even more.
Griffin dips to his left and cracks Smith with an uppercut!
Smith gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Griffin counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Smith misses with a looping right.

Smith tries to clinch but Griffin is having none of it.

Smith throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Griffin sees it coming and avoids it easily.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

and Griffin cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.


The cut above Freddy Smith's eye is starting to cause him problems now.
Griffin dodges the punch combination from Smith.
Smith throws a low kick but it's checked well by Griffin.
Smith looks for a takedown but Griffin sprawls well.
A jab from Griffin finds it's way through Smith's defenses.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Smith takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Smith takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Smith takes a swing at Griffin's ribcage but misses.
Smith avoids a punch combination nicely.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Smith fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Griffin looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.

And that's the end of the fight!
Shane Griffin showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Griffin has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
