Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jay Garcia! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Koa Palani! The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Roger Salmon and Josh West.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Garcia on the wrong end of a nice jab. Garcia closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work. Palani dodges the ground and pound from Garcia. Palani is letting Garcia control him for a moment. Palani looks to move to half guard but instead Garcia has passed into mount! Damn! Garcia wants to control the pace but Palani is squirming around nicely. Garcia prevents Palani from getting the reversal. Palani is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Garcia misses with a head shot. Garcia can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Palani is looking to escape. Garcia working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.
That's one minute gone in the round. Palani is wriggling around trying to escape.
Palani holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Garcia tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Garcia thowing shots but they're missing. Garcia controlling the pace for now. Palani is writhing around trying to get back to his feet. Garcia controlling his opponent. Palani tries to lock up and control but Garcia gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Palani has given up his back - I don’t know if this is a deliberate ploy to try and escape or if he is just struggling down there.
I really don't envy Palani right now.
Garcia struggling to keep hold of the position.
Garcia throwing wild punches that miss their target. Palani is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Garcia has the hooks in. Palani is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Garcia tightening his grip on Palani, looking for the choke. Good control from Garcia. Palani is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet. Palani is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Garcia gets his way!
Garcia looking for the choke from the back. This has been an exciting period of action! Garcia misses with a punch to the head. Palani just trying to survive but Garcia is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd hopeful of a finish here - Garcia's supporters are on their feet, screaming for him to go for the rear naked choke.
Palani is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.
Garcia punches the canvas rather than the man. Garcia misses with a punch to the head. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Garcia looking for the choke from the back. Garcia looking for the RNC. Garcia struggling to land strikes to the head as Palani covers up. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Jay Garcia dominated that round. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the ring so we can get back down to business.
Palani misses with the combination.
Palani scores with a big left there. The judges will like that one. Palani throws a right and a left that Garcia avoids nicely. Garcia takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket. Palani throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Palani lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Garcia looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple. Palani works Garcia's body with a nice hook. Palani tries to bum rush Garcia with a series of wild strikes but Garcia uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Garcia decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Palani is breathing heavily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Garcia is trying to work for a kimura but Palani is defending well.
Palani wants to get back to his feet.
Garcia performing his best blanket impression for a moment. Garcia seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. Palani is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!
