Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Travon Clayton! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ati Kon! The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Paulo Santos and Alexandre Firmino.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Kon fails with the takedown. Nice sprawl there from Kon as Clayton shoots in. Kon tries for a takedown but Clayton circles away easily and Clayton counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Clayton is defended easily by Kon. Kon uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook. Kon throws a left and a right that both miss
and Clayton counters with a takedown into side control. Clayton in side control, throwing shots but Kon defends. Clayton lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Clayton working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Clayton tries to advance position but instead Kon slips a leg back in to half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Clayton is looking for a kimura here.
Clayton is trying to work for a kimura but Kon is defending well.
Kon wants to get back to his feet. Clayton is taking a breather. Kon says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. Clayton thows a huge punch but Kon dodges it nicely.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Clayton looks to score some points with some ground and pound. The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Clayton connects with a nice short shot to Kon's temple. Clayton working over Kon with some ground and pound. Kon looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Clayton tries to pass the half guard into mount. Kon knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Clayton is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Clayton is looking for a kimura but Kon is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Clayton to get the leverage. Clayton is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Kon defends it well. Clayton thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Clayton trying to control from half guard but Kon is working away. Clayton is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Clayton escapes and gets back to his feet. Nice sprawl there from Kon as Clayton shoots in. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Travon Clayton. That's going to take a lot out of him. Clayton closes this distance looking for a takedown but Kon circles away. Kon fails miserably with a takedown attempt. Kon looks gassed! Clayton gets a takedown into half guard. Clayton wants to pass to mount but Kon is defending the position. Kon is looking to control Clayton's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Kon avoid being mounted?
That's four minutes gone in the round. Clayton is nestled in close to Kon, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Kon on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Clayton frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Clayton has control of Kon's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Kon regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Clayton postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Kon looks a forlorn figure.
Kon is rocked! The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Clayton lands a big elbow - Kon is in trouble! More strikes from the mount and Kon is forced to tap out!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:55 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Strikes). Travon Clayton! An out of breath Travon Clayton thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
