PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Chael Patrick (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Brian Spilner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Chael Patrick!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Brian Spilner!
The judges for this bout are Illya Tyunina, Aleksei Zolotukhin and Sergei Dronov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Patrick.
Spilner leaves Patrick with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Nice takedown defense from Patrick. No joy for Spilner on that attempt.
Spilner is trying hard to land a takedown here. Patrick sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Chael Patrick has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Brian Spilner.
Patrick throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Spilner's waist but Spilner gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Patrick off to one side.
Patrick shoots for a takedown but Spilner saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Spilner tries to score a power double leg takedown but Patrick sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Spilner somewhat.
Spilner cracks Patrick with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.
Patrick fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Spilner avoids it really well and circles away.
Patrick tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Spilner swivels and escapes.

Spilner defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Patrick.
Horrible takedown by Patrick or perhaps it was just good defense by Spilner which made him look bad.

and Patrick counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Spilner keeping moving, preventing Patrick from controlling successfully.
Patrick might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Patrick is breathing heavily.
Spilner is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Chael Patrick.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Chael Patrick seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Patrick closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Spilner did well to prevent Patrick getting side control.

Patrick is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Spilner sees it coming and defends easily.

Patrick looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Spilner holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Spilner flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.

Spilner is doing well to control the position and prevent Patrick from advancing to side control.
Spilner has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Patrick is working away from the top position though.
Spilner is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but Patrick is staying active.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Patrick is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Spilner is just riding it out for now. Patrick eventually gives up the hold.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Patrick is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Spilner moves into range and clinches up with Patrick.
Patrick tries for a takedown but Spilner manages to get underhooks.

Spilner successfully pulls guard.

Patrick passes into half guard.
Patrick wants to take a breather but Spilner is having none of it.
Patrick looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Patrick is keen to just control but Spilner is a slippery customer.

Patrick blocks the strikes from Spilner.
Chael Patrick overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Chael Patrick just wasn't active enough.
Patrick shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Spilner as he jumps to the side.
No joy there for Spilner, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Chael Patrick is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Patrick shoots in and drives through. Spilner sprawls well.

Spilner wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
Spilner is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Patrick wants to control from the top but Spilner keeps moving.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Spilner looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Patrick tries to pull guard but Spilner holds him up against the cage and eventually Patrick drops back down to his feet.
Patrick jumps guard but Spilner turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.

Spilner breaks from the clinch.
Patrick shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Spilner as he avoids it easily.
Spilner tries for a takedown but Patrick sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Patrick misses with a takedown attempt - Spilner sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Spilner moves into range and clinches up with Patrick.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Patrick goes for a takedown attempt but Spilner pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

Spilner throws a right and a left that both miss.
Patrick fails with a takedown attempt.
Patrick has a takedown stuffed.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Spilner tries for a takedown but Patrick sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.

Patrick feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Chael Patrick will probably get the nod.

Patrick swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Patrick is pushing Spilner up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
Spilner unloads a knee to the mid-section.
Patrick drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Spilner gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Patrick takes a head kick and shrugs it off.


It looks like Chael Patrick has been cut.
Patrick fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Spilner avoids it really well and circles away.
Spilner shoots for a double leg takedown but Patrick sprawls well. He's pushed Spilner's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Patrick takes a shot right to the bread basket.
Patrick slaps away a takedown attempt from Spilner, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Patrick avoids a punch combination nicely.
Spilner shoots in for a takedown but Patrick shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Patrick is defended easily by Spilner.

Spilner darts in and clinches Patrick up against the cage.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Patrick tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Spilner smiles and moves away.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Patrick is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Spilner pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Spilner is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Patrick is keeping busy.
Spilner tries to pull guard but Patrick holds him up against the cage and eventually Spilner drops back down to his feet.
Patrick is trying to force a seperation but Spilner has the dominant position.

Patrick has picked Spilner up - he's going for a ride! Patrick dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.

Patrick is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Spilner throws a strike from the bottom that misses.

Patrick is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Spilner doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Patrick.
Patrick is trying to control. Spilner wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Brian Spilner comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Patrick has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
