PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Job McKnight (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chato Sonnen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Job McKnight!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Chato Sonnen!
The judges for this bout are Radbod Blank, Paulsen Ambrosius and Albert Achterberg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Sonnen closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming McKnight to the mat! McKnight manages to get full guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Sonnen engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

McKnight looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Sonnen loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
McKnight is trying to control the position from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sonnen slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
McKnight is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

McKnight wants to sweep here but Sonnen controlling him for the moment.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Job McKnight just wasn't active enough.
Sonnen throws a sloppy head kick and McKnight moves out of range easily.
A head kick misses from Sonnen.
McKnight tries to clinch but Sonnen moves out of range.
Sonnen throws a nice looking combination but McKnight bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
The fight stays on the outside here - Sonnen looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Sonnen moves out of range as McKnight throws a body kick.
McKnight lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Sonnen circles away quickly and effectively.

Sonnen shoots in and bounces McKnight off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

McKnight has his foot on Sonnen's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Sonnen works his way back into a safe position though.

Sonnen wants to stand but McKnight is controlling his posture from full guard.

Sonnen passes McKnight's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

Sonnen working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sonnen tries to stand but can't do so whilst McKnight controls his leg.
Sonnen throws a strike but McKnight avoids it easily and moves to full guard.
Sonnen controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Sonnen decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on McKnight, up you get!

McKnight avoids the head kick by Sonnen.
McKnight moves out of range of the body kick from Sonnen.
Sonnen avoids a punch combination nicely.
Sonnen is looking to land body kicks.
McKnight tries a head kick but it misses.
McKnight shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Sonnen sprawls well. Sonnen wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. McKnight gets slowly back to his feet.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
McKnight throws a sloppy head kick and Sonnen moves out of range easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Chato Sonnen dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Sonnen drives through with a takedown into McKnight's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
McKnight is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Sonnen is controlling him.
Sonnen postures up.
Sonnen stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. McKnight swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Sonnen slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

McKnight has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Sonnen can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Sonnen sitting in guard here, content to control.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Sonnen is looking to stand up but McKnight won't let him.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Chato Sonnen hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Sonnen connects with a body shot that sends McKnight's belly button to the back.

Sonnen stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. McKnight swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Sonnen drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and McKnight dives on top into guard.
Chato Sonnen has got the better of the ground game so far.

Sonnen looking for a guillotine here but McKnight defends easily.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

McKnight stands and steps away. Sonnen gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Chato Sonnen showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!


McKnight closes the distance and clinches up with Sonnen, looking for a takedown. McKnight pushes Sonnen against the cage but Sonnen circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
McKnight tries to close the distance and clinch but Sonnen swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

McKnight gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Sonnen to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Sonnen really doesn't want to stay on the ground with McKnight. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Sonnen wants to stand but McKnight is controlling his posture from full guard.

Sonnen is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Sonnen is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Chato Sonnen was stalling too much, according to the referee.

McKnight drives through and clinches with Sonnen against the cage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Sonnen jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as McKnight walks away with a smile on his face. Sonnen gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Nice takedown defense from Sonnen. No joy for McKnight on that attempt.
Sonnen lands with a nice body punch.
McKnight pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Sonnen shoots in and gets a takedown into McKnight's guard.
Sonnen in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Sonnen prevents McKnight from getting back to his feet.
McKnight controls Sonnen momentarily but Sonnen frees himself.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Sonnen with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

Sonnen stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. McKnight swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Sonnen not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

Sonnen stays in close to McKnight's body and controls the position.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Sonnen shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Sonnen was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
McKnight might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Sonnen avoids the attempt from McKnight to control.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Sonnen unloads with some vicious shots from mount and McKnight wants out - he looks towards the referee who steps in to save him! Sonnen celebrates on the cage and the crowd goes wild!
