Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the light heavyweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Steve Green! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Theo Gillberg! The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, Dean Styles and Bruno Lombardi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Green gets a takedown into half guard. Gillberg looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Green wants to free his trapped foot but Gillberg is holding on for dear life with his legs. Gillberg is looking to improve his position.
Green is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Gillberg is trying to control but can't.
That's one minute gone in the round. Well, if Green is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Gillberg wants to control but Green is keeping busy and won't allow it.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Green throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Gillberg's waist but Gillberg gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Green off to one side. Steve Green seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Green shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Green swings away with a leg kick that misses. Green moves in looking to clinch but Gillberg pushes him off. Green drives through with a takedown into guard. Gillberg had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Green is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Gillberg Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Green's back instead. Gillberg is persistently looking for the submission but Green is defending it well.
Green breaks Gillberg's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gillberg has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Green can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Green pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Gillberg is keeping the position for now. Green is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Gillberg is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Gillberg has escaped and now he's on top! Green is breathing heavily. Gillberg looking to sit in guard and control but Green gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Gillberg is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Green wants to control from the top but Gillberg keeps moving. Gillberg kicks Green off and gets to his feet. Gillberg tries to clinch there but Green circles away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Theo Gillberg will probably get the nod. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!
Green fails with an attempt to clinch.
Green shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Gillberg scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard. Gillberg closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Green has guillotine here! It looks pretty tight! Could this be all over! No, Gillberg escapes and passes into side control at the same time. Nice work there by Gillberg! Gillberg is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Green has escaped the position, nice work there.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gillberg is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Green is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Gillberg wants to lay and pray for a moment but Green keeps working. An elbow from Gillberg crashes against the mat.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Gillberg wants to lay and pray for a moment but Green keeps working. Gillberg tries to move to mount but Green blocks the move with his legs. Gillberg trying to control the action but Green is working from the bottom.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Green has his takedown stuffed and Gillberg counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Green!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Green wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back. Green wants to control his opponent's hands but Gillberg gets his hands free. Gillberg looking for the rear naked choke. And he's got it! Green taps!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:44 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Theo Gillberg! Theo Gillberg retains his light heavyweight title!
