Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Mark Kerr! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, John Williams! The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Emerson Jorge and Felipe Paraventi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Kerr fails with the takedown. Kerr throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Williams was covering up waiting for the punch and Kerr finishes the takedown easily into guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. Kerr is looking to work some ground and pound but Williams has wrist control. Kerr throwing strikes from guard but Williams blocks nicely. Kerr scoring with punches to the head and body. Kerr trying to control the position from guard on top but Williams is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Kerr in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Kerr working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Williams's head. Kerr missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Williams keeping full guard, as Kerr tries to pass. Kerr controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
That's one minute gone in the round. Williams trying to keep a closed guard but Kerr is proving a slippery customer.
Kerr cracks Williams with a solid left hand. Williams preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Kerr content to stall in guard here. Kerr in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Kerr works over Williams with some ground and pound from guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Kerr wants to control from the top but Williams keeps moving.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Kerr lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard. This has been an exciting period of action! Williams preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Williams keeping moving, preventing Kerr from controlling successfully. Kerr scoring with punches to the head and body.
Williams is rocked! Kerr working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Williams is still in real trouble! Can Kerr finish him? Kerr stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Williams swivels though and keeps the full guard. Kerr is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. Williams seems to have recovered his senses. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Williams looking for a sweep. Not yet Williams, not yet. Kerr stays in close to Williams's body and controls the position. Williams keeping full guard, as Kerr tries to pass. Kerr working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Kerr working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound. Kerr postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. Kerr postures up.
Kerr in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Kerr won't allow Williams to sweep him here. Kerr stands and throws Williams's legs to the side, diving into side control. Williams wants to get back to his feet. Kerr looks up at the clock and then as Williams takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Kerr smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
This has been an exciting period of action! Kerr is looking to take a break and control but Williams is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Kerr lands a strong strike to the head of Williams. That's dazed him! Kerr looking to finish here. Williams is waving his arms around trying to block but he's hurt badly - Kerr lands more strikes and the referee steps in to end the fight!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:58 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Mark Kerr!
