PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jhon Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Justin Hodges (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jones kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Bloodwork. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jhon Jones!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Justin Hodges!
The judges for this bout are Donatello Bradman, Summer Carpenter and Bruno Hogan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Hodges rushes Jones and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Hodges is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Hodges looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
Hodges landing some nice looking knees to the body.
Hodges wants to break free but Jones has control.
Hodges can't get the takedown.
Hodges is looking for a takedown.
Jones tries for a takedown but Hodges manages to get underhooks.

Jones is trying to trip Hodges. He has hold of a leg but Hodges is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Jones persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Jones throws a big elbow that misses.
Jones has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Jones is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Jones tries to free his leg and advance position but Hodges is retaining full guard.

Jones drops back looking for a leg! Hodges is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Hodges manages to kick Jones off! Jones jumps back into Hodges's guard.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Jones feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Jones seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Jones is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Hodges knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Hodges wants to control but Jones postures up.

Jones seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Hodges for as long as he can get away with.

Jones thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Jones takes a little break here. Hodges wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
Hodges tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Jones wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Hodges is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
A lull in the action here as Jones stalls from top position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Jones shoots for a double leg takedown but Hodges sprawls well. He's pushed Jones's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
No luck for Jones with that takedown attempt.
Jones shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Hodges as he avoids it easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jhon Jones. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Jones changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Hodges looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Jones controls the position.
Jones knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Hodges on the ground.
Hodges is breathing heavily.
Jones trying to control the position but Hodges is working away.
Jones moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Jhon Jones.

Hodges forces Jones back against the cage and clinches.
Jones prevents Hodges from breaking the clinch.
Jones drops down looking for an ankle pick but Hodges pulls his leg out and moves away.
Jones fails with a takedown attempt.

Jones shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Jones was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Jones has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Hodges keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Jones controlling from the full mount.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Hodges throwing punches from his back but nothing is landing.
Hodges tries to reverse the position but Jones maintains control.
Jones controlling his opponent.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Jones is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Hodges can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jhon Jones dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Jones throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Hodges's waist but Hodges gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Jones off to one side.

Hodges gets caught flat footed, as Jones shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Hodges takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Hodges gets caught napping as Jones dives in and scores a takedown. Hodges manages to retain guard.
Jhon Jones overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Hodges keeping full guard, as Jones tries to pass.
Jones is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Hodges not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Jones wants to control from the top but Hodges keeps moving.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Jhon Jones just wasn't active enough.
Hodges throws a head kick but Jones moves out of range.

Jones looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Jones might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Jones decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Hodges, up you get!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Jones shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Hodges manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Hodges wants to sweep but no luck.

Jones stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hodges swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Jones stalling.
Jones is pressing down on Hodges's thigh, looking to free his foot. Hodges is holding on for now.
Hodges is trying to control but can't.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Jones bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Hodges is trying to get back to half guard.
Jones controlling from side mount.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Jones is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Hodges is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jhon Jones showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Jones, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
