Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Dion Watts! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Curtis West! The judges for this bout are Jonathan Paton, Bruno Lombardi and Anthony Taglia.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! West tries to clinch but Watts is having none of it. Watts displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from West. West avoids the head kick by Watts.
West is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Watts's half guard. It looks like West is going to stand back up.
West not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Watts gets back to full guard.
West wants to get up but he can't break Watts's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. West must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
That's one minute gone in the round. Watts keeping full guard, as West tries to pass. Watts looking to control.
Watts pulls West in to control the position. West makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. West throws a strike but Watts rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. West controlling Watts's posture.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Let's hope that West has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. West keeping full guard, as Watts tries to pass. Watts loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. West with a poor takedown and Watts counters by moving into the clinch. West looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Watts successfully pulls guard.
West wants to stand but Watts has a closed guard, so he can't escape. Watts has his foot on West's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. West works his way back into a safe position though. West postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Watts is looking to sinch up a triangle. West throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Watts's body to avoid the submission. Watts has instead reached around West's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Watts arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:51 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Dion Watts!
