Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Rocky Olzzen! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Roberto Cruz! The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Hugh Johnson and Steve Erwin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Cruz circles away from the clinch attempt and Cruz counters with a single leg into guard. Olzzen didn't expect that. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Cruz drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Olzzen dives on top into guard. Cruz has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Olzzen can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Cruz is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Cruz looking for a guillotine here but Olzzen defends easily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Olzzen trying to control the position from guard on top but Cruz is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Olzzen trying to stand up but can't free himself from Cruz's guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Cruz working for a triangle but Olzzen defends it easily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Cruz looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Olzzen wants to pass the guard but Cruz is keeping the position. Olzzen trying to control but Cruz is working from the bottom. Olzzen is really struggling to control Cruz but he's trying to hold on to the position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Olzzen looking to sit in guard and control but Cruz gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Cruz drops back looking for a leg! Olzzen is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Olzzen manages to kick Cruz off! Cruz jumps back into Olzzen's guard. Cruz preventing the sweep. Olzzen keeping moving, preventing Cruz from controlling successfully. Cruz drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Olzzen dives on top into guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Olzzen postures up in Cruz's guard and throws a big left but Cruz blocks it. Cruz is pulling down on Olzzen's head. It's preventing any offense from Olzzen, at least for the moment. Olzzen throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Cruz works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Olzzen wants to stand but Cruz has a closed guard, so he can't escape. Cruz should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Cruz utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Roberto Cruz dominated that round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.
Cruz gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Olzzen to score an easy takedown into full guard. Olzzen got a little sloppy there for a moment and Cruz has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Olzzen has managed to get both his arms back between Cruz's legs - danger averted. Cruz is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Olzzen has his hands clasped together but Cruz extends an breaks Olzzen's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Cruz.
