Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Kaspars Daugavins! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Pieter Pieter! The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Dillan Fox and Gregory Folan.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Daugavins gets caught napping as Pieter dives in and scores a takedown. Daugavins manages to retain guard. Pieter tries to free his leg and advance position but Daugavins is retaining full guard. Pieter is working Daugavins over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Pieter throws a strike but Daugavins rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. Pieter looking for a sweep. Not yet Pieter, not yet. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Pieter is on top in guard.

That's one minute gone in the round. Pieter throws a big right hand that misses. Pieter throws a big right hand that misses. Daugavins controls Pieter momentarily but Pieter frees himself. Pieter stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Daugavins swivels though and keeps the full guard. Daugavins looking to hit a scissor sweep but Pieter is one step ahead there. Daugavins is trying to hold Pieter in close to prevent damage but Pieter has managed to pass into half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Pieter stalling. Pieter is working for a kimura but Daugavins is defending it quite comfortably.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Pieter is thwarting Daugavins's attempts to control the position. Pieter throwing shots but Daugavins is blocking nicely. Daugavins trying to hold on to Pieter's head to control him but Pieter postures up.
Pieter passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Daugavins! Pieter throwing shots from mount but they're not landing.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Daugavins slips a leg in and gets back to half guard. Daugavins pushes Pieter off looking to stand but Pieter dives back in and keeps control.
Pieter is just content to waste time from the top position. Daugavins takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard. Pieter drops back, looking for a kneebar! Daugavins looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Daugavins looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Daugavins! The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Pieter is positioning himself to get back to half guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Pieter Pieter dominated that round. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!
Daugavins loads up on a big right hand but Pieter slips the punch. Pieter feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Pieter trying to control the position from guard on top but Daugavins is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Pieter throws an elbow that misses. Daugavins uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Pieter's guard. Nice move by Daugavins! Pieter wants to sweep here but Daugavins controlling him for the moment.
That's one minute gone in the round. Pieter is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Pieter looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Daugavins puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard. Pieter has a hand on Daugavins's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Daugavins takes advantage of the position though and mounts him! Pieter is looking to improve his position but Daugavins isn't that keen on the idea.
That's two minutes gone in the round. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Pieter can do anything to dispel that myth. Pieter Pieter has got the better of the ground game so far.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Pieter wants to control but Daugavins is having none of it. Daugavins tries to control but Pieter wriggling away.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Pieter can't escape the position.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Pieter shoots in but Daugavins avoids the takedown attempt easily. Pieter shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Daugavins napping and manages to drive through into side control! And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Pieter Pieter showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Pieter displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Daugavins throws out the jab. Daugavins throws a lazy uppercut
and Pieter counters with a single leg into guard. Daugavins didn't expect that. Pieter must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Daugavins preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Pieter throwing strikes but missing. Pieter postures up.
Pieter throws a big right hand that misses. Pieter trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Pieter accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
That's one minute gone in the round. Pieter controls the pace of the fight for a moment. Pieter wants to control from the top but Daugavins keeps moving. Pieter preventing the sweep. Pieter missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Pieter slips nicely into half guard. Pieter missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Pieter lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Daugavins down.

Pieter looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. Pieter just content to control the position. Check out the look on Pieter's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Pieter working the head and body with strikes. Pieter in side control, throwing shots but Daugavins defends. Daugavins wants to control but Pieter postures up. Pieter wants to lay and pray for a moment but Daugavins keeps working. Pieter working the strikes but Daugavins uses the opportunity to regain half guard. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Pieter seems to be looking for submissions.

Daugavins leaves Pieter with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Daugavins dips to his left and cracks Pieter with an uppercut! Kaspars Daugavins is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Daugavins misses with a straight right. Pieter looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Daugavins is fending him off so far but Pieter persists. Nope, Daugavins circles away and we're back to standing. Pieter tries for a takedown but Daugavins circles away easily and Pieter takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Pieter has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Pieter there as he acknowledges the shot. Daugavins fails to land with a series of punches.
Pieter Pieter is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Pieter fails with the takedown and Daugavins counters with a nice uppercut. Pieter misses with a takedown attempt and Daugavins counters with a nice body shot.

Daugavins throws a right hand that Pieter ducks under and follows up with a left that Pieter also avoids with ease. Pieter fails miserably with a takedown attempt. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Pieter.

Daugavins is bucking up trying to escape but Pieter cracks him with another couple of good strikes. Pieter lands a big shot there that rocks Daugavins but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Pieter breaks from Daugavins's wrist control and lands an elbow. Pieter is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Daugavins has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Daugavins! We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Daugavins looking to pass the guard.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Pieter feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Kaspars Daugavins has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Pieter trying to control the position from guard on top but Daugavins is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
