Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, George Coleman! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, ur Down! The judges for this bout are Winston Howard, Summer Carpenter and Eliza Hachem.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Down has his takedown stuffed and Coleman counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Down! The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace. Coleman prevents Down from getting the reversal. Coleman lands with some strikes. Coleman wants to control the pace but Down is squirming around nicely. Down taking shots to the head. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Coleman takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Coleman with the ground and pound from mount.
That's one minute gone in the round. Coleman trying to control but Down is having none of it. Coleman working for a submission but Down is keeping him at bay. Down is wriggling around trying to escape.
Down regains half guard. Down is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Coleman pulls his head out easily. Down looking for subs from the bottom but Coleman mounts him!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Coleman looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet. Down tries to reverse the position but Coleman maintains control. Down is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Coleman controlling his opponent. Coleman pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's three minutes gone in the round. The referee warns Down that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Down is working to get back to half guard.
Coleman working away from the top, dropping strikes. Coleman thowing shots but they're missing. Coleman controlling from mount. Down regains half guard. The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Coleman connects with a nice short shot to Down's temple.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Coleman decides to stand and escape the position. Coleman rushes Down and presses him up against the cage. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Coleman breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Coleman throws a series of punches but Down moves out of range. Coleman closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Down did well to prevent Coleman getting side control. Coleman is breathing heavily. Coleman wants to pass to mount but Down is defending the position. Down looking for submissions from an awkward position here. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Down actively working from the bottom here. Down looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
George Coleman dominated that round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Coleman shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Down is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Coleman pulls his head out easily. Coleman with a momentary lay and pray from half guard. Coleman missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Down is working on a guillotine. He's managed to get to full guard and he's really squeezing tight! Coleman is tapping! Great win for Down!
