Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jose Chilavert! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Juan Hernandez! The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Felipe Paraventi and Edson Gomes.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Hernandez tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Chilavert swivels and escapes. Excellent takedown into side control there by Hernandez. Chilavert takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
You can see the frustration on Chilavert's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Chilavert is pushing Hernandez's head away, looking to escape. Hernandez manages to hold on to the position though. Hernandez creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots. Chilavert wants to get back to his feet. Hernandez should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete. Hernandez trying to control the position but Chilavert is working away. Hernandez swings around for an armbar but Chilavert sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Hernandez's guard. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Chilavert postures up.
Hernandez keeping moving, preventing Chilavert from controlling successfully. Hernandez had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Chilavert defends it easily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Chilavert trying to control the position from guard on top but Hernandez is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Chilavert won't allow Hernandez to sweep him here. Chilavert with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Hernandez tries to land a sweep but no joy. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Chilavert accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Chilavert stands up from Hernandez's guard - Chilavert perhaps looking for a knockout. Chilavert slaps away a takedown attempt from Hernandez, before circling back to the center of the mat.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Chilavert tries to grapple but his opponent circles and Hernandez counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Chilavert pushes Hernandez off looking to stand but Hernandez dives back in and keeps control.
Hernandez trying to control the action but Chilavert is working from the bottom. Chilavert is trying to get back to full guard. Hernandez is stalling here. Chilavert is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Hernandez seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Chilavert has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work. Hernandez is trying to get back to half guard. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Hernandez can do anything to dispel that myth. Hernandez gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there! Chilavert tries to control but Hernandez wriggling away.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Hernandez is trying to reverse the position but instead Chilavert has taken his back - oops! Chilavert working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet. Chilavert will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Chilavert doesn't have the hooks in and Hernandez manages to turn into his guard.
Chilavert utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Hernandez is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Chilavert is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Chilavert has escaped and now he's on top! Hernandez working a defensive guard here.
Hernandez is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Hernandez controls Chilavert momentarily but Chilavert frees himself. Hernandez looking to hit a scissor sweep but Chilavert is one step ahead there. Hernandez is trying to control the position but Chilavert postures up. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up. Hernandez tries to land a sweep but no joy. Hernandez keeping moving, preventing Chilavert from controlling successfully. This has been an exciting period of action!
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Hernandez fails with a takedown attempt. Jose Chilavert has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Juan Hernandez. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Hernandez looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Chilavert is fending him off so far but Hernandez persists. Nope, Chilavert circles away and we're back to standing. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Juan Hernandez dominated that round. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Chilavert misses with a few strikes there.
No luck for Hernandez with that takedown attempt. Chilavert tries to close the distance and clinch up but Hernandez swats him away and circles back towards the center. Hernandez misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Hernandez throws a lazy uppercut
and Chilavert counters with a nice low kick that buckles Hernandez's knee momentarily. Chilavert tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Hernandez paws at him with a jab and circles away. Hernandez keeps the fight on the outside. A punch lands to the side of Hernandez 's head but he takes it in his stride.
It looks like Juan Hernandez has been cut. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Chilavert lands a big head kick that sends Hernandez tumbling to the mat! Chilavert takes a step backwards and waves Hernandez back to his feet - he wants the finish! Chilavert fails with an attempt to clinch.
Chilavert looks for a left high kick but can't connect. Chilavert backs up to catch a breather... no he lunges forward with a huge flying knee that smacks Hernandez's temple! It sends Hernandez violently to the canvas! The crowd goes nuts as Chilavert celebrates and the doctors try to help Hernandez!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:48 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Flying Knee). Jose Chilavert!
